From some notes I made at the time:

Blue and yellow at the bottom and a red/orange dot at the top. Apparently in about 2003 the colours for the top line changed - orange is now the new white. This top coloured dot determines whether you need a 3mm or 6mm compensation plate (996 343 511 00 or 01) - essentially the rubber plate between the top of the spring and the support plate.

Thanks once again ..... and you've managed to solve the mystery of the orange marking near the top of the spring.

No excuse now for me not to get on with it!
