$5800 for a 97 Boxster?

We are in the middle of winter here, not too many are for sale right now. Last year I noticed at least a dozen from $5k-$6k. Obviously, these cars are not mint garage queens but would make good everyday drivers.

I bought my 97 boxster almost exactly a year ago for $5500 with 136K miles, and I believe original clutch and IMS. The previous owner had it for 11 years and said it was the best car he had owned. I have put more than 10k reliable miles on it in the last year of ownership. The top gives me fits, so I converted it to manual operation, I did the front brakes and changed the oil. Other than that, just did a few upgrades like carrera classic wheels, de-snork, and an exhaust.

The car is not perfect, which is fine with me. I love it and I drive the crap out of it. I plan to replace the clutch and the IMSB, but it doesn't keep me up at night (just like the t-belt and balance belt on my 951, which are due this summer). Personally, I think early Boxsters might be the best used sports car bargain out there right now, even with the inherent risks.

Arrived home last night in the Boxster after driving 30 miles from work. As I was sitting letting the engine idle a bit I reflected on my experience with my Boxster and believe it to be the best car I've ever owned.
It has been everything I expected a Porsche to be and I had set the bar pretty high given the cost of the Boxster was over double what I had paid for my previous car a 2001 Camara Z28 (new) just 4 months before buying the Boxster in Jan. 2002.
Even with just less than 1000 miles to go before the 300K mile mark I can't see getting rid of the car.

I'm helping a friend buy her first Porsche, and the Boxster is one of the options. As part of my research, I found the following.
From the Oregon PCA Blog:
"Lastly, actually driving your Porsche more often and avoiding higher gears in order to keep the revs above 2500-3000 rpm is another good step to take to improve the life of the ball-bearing in the intermediate shaft(the faster you spin the IMS bearing, the longer it will last and less it will wear). Although there is limited data, the general trend is that lower mileage vehicles with infrequent oil changes or driven light-footed (as in run at low speed/engine rpms) are most likely to suffer a failure rather than those cars that are driven hard and well-maintained."
