I'm going to place another order to Pelican in a couple of days...I plan on getting an IMS kit(pelican), RMS, tools to remove trans, mag drain plug, and gaskets. What else should I do while I'm at it?
I just don't know how much I want to put into a motor I'm going to replace. I'd like to get a year or two(12k miles) out of it before the swap.
Opinions are welcome!

Update:
Got some parts in from Pelican.
Transmission is out...
It's pretty light...
What a mess to clean up...
Might as well replace this...
Looks like it's seen some heat...
Not sure how much wear is on this without checking the service records...

Update:
Removed oil pan...no metal no plastic.
Started on the IMS bearing replacement.
-Locked engine to TDC with pin.
-Removed green plugs from passenger side of engine.
-Spent around 2 hours trying to get 3 chain tool to locked in both cam slots on passenger side of engine With pin in. Lots of rotating the engine over and over. Removed pin and found it's much easier to rotate the engine and get the tool installed from under the car, then insert the pin.
-Everything is locked in place.
-Removed tensioner from IMS Chain and passenger side.
-Removed IMS flange anf found this.
I was not expecting to see this. Bearing has 208k miles on it and the seals are intact and there is no play in the shaft and it spins freely.
I have a pelican bearing ready to go in...I've come this far should I go ahead and replace it?

Burning Brakes
New part could be bad
Installation could be bad
Old part could fail
Who knows what bad AOS and pressure have done
We know of ones with 250K+ miles and still original.
Roll them dice. Good luck whatever way you go.

It's out and the other is in.
Other than having a hard time getting the snap ring out(had to buy a better set of pliers) everything went really smooth.
Today I am replacing the RMS.

Last weekend I replaced:
RMS
clutch tube
clutch tube(seal)
clutch release bearing
front engine mount
pilot bearing
clear corners
flywheel bolts
pressure plate bolts
I found the slave cylinder boot torn so I will have to replace that. While removing the transmission I plugged the lines with some rubber plugs but ended up getting some air in the system that needed to be bled out.
IMS Bearing out...
Torquing the flywheel bolts...
Cheap tool could not handle additional 120º...

Yeah its a continual problem trying to find tools that can take a real load. Pretty sure i went through at least three T55 bits on those flywheel bolts.
This sure sounds like the car a guy was asking about on the 986 forum. Either way you made a great score. You got lucky.
The only reason to consider installing a Renegade or Subaru conversion is if the M96 is toast. For all its faults (And it has many) it is a ton of fun to give the business to
