2004 Boxter
Friend with 2004 Boxter heard loud bang while driving - car would no longer move. Had it towed to dealer was told it was a bad driveshaft but maybe also severe engine damage, and could cost $15,000 to repair depending on further exam. As the car was being removed from the dealer, the mechanic offered him $5,000 for the car as is.
I own a 928 and do my own work so I don't know any mechanics is Las Vegas, NV.
Can someone recommend one that he is satisfied with.
Thanks.

If the engine stopped -- and I would not advise you to advise your friend to try to start the engine just to see -- then it could be an internal engine problem.

Odd that "Friend" doesn't crawl underneath to look/feel for a dangling 1/2 shaft. It is easy to do. Yes, there are splash shields in the way but some simple observation
may be very useful. The splash shields may have already been removed which would make it easy. Send us photos and we'll save him $k

My guess is if the incident happened -- and I have no reason not believe the OP -- the dealer doesn't know about this or the mechanic would be fired.
Were I in the "friend's" position I would be highly suspicious to receive such a dire prognosis by the tech and then have it followed by an offer from the same tech to buy the car.
This just highlights the importance of getting an accurate diagnosis of the car's condition so the friend can make the right decision based on knowing the car's condition.

Thanks for the responses.
Don't know anything about Boxters and never heard of IMS failure.
But when I heard his story I was very suspicious
Friend (really an associate) knows nothing about cars.
I also posted on the 928 forum and got names of a couple of good local Porsche mechanics from there..
I'll post result after he finds out what the problem is.
