Default Newbie 02 6sp Boxster S owner, multiple issues

2002 Boxster S - Purchased 12/2/2013 eCarOne Carrollton, TX 75006

WP0CB29802U664290 96918 miles

97500 mi @ Albuquerque (I am 67)

1) Replaced Motor mount
2) Installed GBox 2nd gear detent
3) Changed Oil and Filter (magnetic plug installed)
4) Changed Transmission oil
5) Replaced cabin and engine filters
6) Cleaned engine for observation

Issues:

1) Metal filing in oil filter (maybe drive 1000mi & change oil again?)

2) Oil on top of engine (Cleaned engine and watching for oil) (check AOS hose? -- which one?)

3) Second gear still pops out when cold? (am I doomed to rebuild this Trans?)

4) Driver side top wire does not seat properly (is this just an adjustment?)

5) Passenger side top tensioner missing (on order Pelican)

6) Passenger side top ball joint stud missing (? order from Denmark?)

7) How to remove windstop? (someone local must know?)

8) Cup holder stuck? (is there an easy way without removing panel?)

9) Driver seat tear (replace just the torn parts?)

10) Driver seat will not fold forward (do I have to take the seat out?)

11) Fabric clip broken (what does this fabric fence do?)

Any hints for resolutions would be appreciated by this old man

1) Metal filing in oil filter (maybe drive 1000mi & change oil again?)

While a piece of ferrous metal is a bit of a concern, it does necessarily mean the end of the world.

What did the filter element look like?

If you want to run the engine, drive the car a while and then recheck the oil filter housing oil and filter element -- even replacing this with a new one -- that's not a bad idea. 1000 miles is a bit much, though. OTOH, you have put over 500 miles on the car since you bought it. Generally, serious internal engine problems that result in metal shedding do not take 500+ miles to mature into full blown remove the engine and fix issues.

Err on the side of caution. New filter and top up the oil then after running the engine for an hour say drop the filter housing and check the oil and filter for any debris. If you find none then fine. Maybe 1000 miles is ok before the next check. If you find some then… well, that's a thread for another day.

2) Oil on top of engine (Cleaned engine and watching for oil) (check AOS hose? -- which one?)

Engine oil? If so, any AOS hose. The oil can be from a leaking/cracked oil filler tube too, so check it carefully. Another possible source is a leaking oil/water heat exchanger.

3) Second gear still pops out when cold? (am I doomed to rebuild this Trans?)

You replaced the detent and it apparently didn't help. Assuming the work was done correctly the problem lies with the shift linkage and adjustment is called for, or the shifter fork is bent and not fully engaging the gear, or the gear dogs are worn out. The latter two possibilities I suspect require a transmission tear down/rebuild, but you need to be sure, so I'd advise you to consult with a transmission expert for his opinion.

4) Driver side top wire does not seat properly (is this just an adjustment?

5) Passenger side top tensioner missing (on order Pelican)

6) Passenger side top ball joint stud missing (? order from Denmark?)

7) How to remove windstop? (someone local must know?)

8) Cup holder stuck? (is there an easy way without removing panel?)

9) Driver seat tear (replace just the torn parts?)

10) Driver seat will not fold forward (do I have to take the seat out?)

11) Fabric clip broken (what does this fabric fence do?)

For (9) above: An auto upholstery shop can replace just one panel of the seat.

For the rest I've got nothing to offer.

Thanks for the help.

(1) I will put on a couple hundred miles and then pull the oil filter apart.

(3) I will pull the center console out and move the for and aft cable one notch shorter and see if that helps the second gear pop out problem. (The GBox detent appeared to somewhat improve the behavior)

#7Windstop has two thumb squeeze mounts that resemble a trigger. You simply squeeze both simultaneously and gently push the screen forward from behind. You will see people parting out cars fairly frequently I'll bet someone has a new wind diffuser you can buy to replace the one with the broken tab.

#9 may be easier and as cheap to find OEM replacement seat

#10 Very frequent occurrence for you to think you have raised the release high enough to move the seat when you have not. Make sure you are raising the release to it's maximum before even pushing the seat forward at all, bet it works.

#11 fabric fence on plastic that fits into ridge is mostly cosmetic and forms the bottom of the top when you look in from the back, it might also divert any water that leaks to a drain on either side.

PS 96K miles, yeah I'd keep an eye out for oil filter metal but I'd simply drive it and enjoy it and fix it when it needs fixing. And if you are handy a Bentley manual for the Boxster is a very nice reference for side jobs.

Default Broken seat release tab

The driver seat would not release forward. I took the seat apart and found a broken tab. The seat was "stressed" by a PO. The main web bottom is broken. Several of the plastic tabs are also broken. DIY repair is looking dubious at best.
