Excluded VIN Eisen IMS settlement
Anybody have any idea why my 2001 Boxster S has an excluded vin?
I had engine failure at @82k miles, symptoms consistent with IMS failure. Replaced the motor and sold the car.
VIN WPOCB29811U660196
Is this just the lawyers being wacky, or was I really unlucky and mine should not have failed?

I'd say you were doubly unlucky. The engine should not have failed and that it did and the vehicle is excluded just adds insult to injury.
Do not buy a lottery ticket today.
On a more serious note not sure what you can do about the failure and your car's VIN being excluded.

IIUC the change from double-row to single-row IMS bearing took place midyear 2001, and nobody has a good list of affected cars. I've been looking for such a list myself as I'm considering purchasing a 986 of roughly that vintage.

Got me to thinking so I went out and checked my 02's build date: 10/01. I was thinking perhaps it was built earlier in the year and had a double row bearing which might help account for the bearing's longevity (275K miles) but it could very well have a single row bearing. I'm so confused.

Porsche was well know for reaching into the parts bin and grabbing anything that happened to be there. Recall they were still fighting for their financial life.
You wouldn't know what bearing you actually had unless they disassembled the engine or someone happened to take pictures of that area.
If your car was excluded, you are free to pursue a private lawsuit funded by you. Class action lawyers only deal in big groups and how you'd ever assemble a large enough group to interest a class action lawyer is beyond me.
