2001 Boxster S original owner. No failure. Changed IMS out at yearly maintenance in 2014 at appox 18000 mi. by the Porsche dealer. LNE kit. I love the car and plan to keep it a long time, figured it was cheap insurance. The dealer installed a LNE ident plate in the door jamb and mod was entered into the cars permanent maintenance record.

1999 - 2.5L 122,000 km - 3rd owner - IMS was never changed - Did Clutch,Flywheel and RMS and IMS and clutch needed replacing - Bearing was still nice and tight but seal had started to fail. Suspect it would of only been time before it tore itself apart.

I have a 1998 Boxster w/ 35k miles. No sign of any problem so far.

Replaced mine at 46K with the LNE ceramic design as part of repairs and upgrades to 3.2 engine after a cracked head led to intermix. Engine is now displacing 3.6 L (with LNE nickies cylinders) and has been trouble free for around 10K miles. Not a failure, just part of work done to repair another Porsche design weakness. I really like the additional power and torque, as well as not having to worry about catastrophic failures of the IMS.

I am getting ready to replace my IMS, I have been interested in the EPS solution but am wary of the source of oil, where you punch a hole in some seal/cover? How many miles on the installation, are you happy with it?

Hi Folks,

Just purchased a 2000 Boxster S with 41000 miles. The previous owner had it since 2005 and doesn't seem the sort to abuse it. He is aware of the IMS issue but did not replace the bearing. I expect there is a thread or an archive or wiki around here detailing what a Boxster owner should do to minimize the chances of bearing failure. If you could point me to a good source of information, I'd be grateful.

Also, if anyone can recommend a Porsche mechanic in the Fort Wayne, Indiana area, I'd be grateful for that too. I know of one, but some folks I know don't trust the garage for which he works.

Just got a 2001 Porsche Boxster with 53k not sure if I should do bearing or not!

99 Boxster, 55,000 miles, original IMS. Added magnetic oil plug. Get oil samples and inspect filter regularly. Won't be addressing IMS until I replace the clutch unless these studies show there's a potential problem.
