No failure yet on my 05 base boxster at 33000 miles. But worry every time I run into posts like this one. Did install a magnetic oil plug and change oil twice as often. Thinking of LM bearing upgrade later this year.

No failure yet on my '98 986 with 107k miles, 3k oil changes, although the debris field from my last two oil filters seems to be increasing in quantity. None of the particulate debris react to a magnet. Should they if it's a failing IMS bearing? Are the particles possibly from chain guides during my cold start up noise that only lasts about a second each time? Hmmm...

2001 S with 93k miles on original imsb. Owned for the last three years. Daily driver. Occasional red line runs through some back roads. No track time in my three years.

Fingers crossed until clutch change. Not sure which imsb I'll go with then. Waiting on Pedro's cure.

It looks like Mr. IMS may have reared its ugly head on my 2002 2.7 Boxster with 79,000 miles. The engine has a random clicking (rattle) at all temperatures. I drained the oil and cut open the filter and found numerous amounts of glitter. There are no large particles and the majority are silver with a small amount of gold. When I changed the oil 1,400 miles ago I cut open the filter and found absolutely no particles. The car is street driven only. My next step is to remove the tip trans and pull out the IMS bearing. I'm hoping that it is only the bearing and nothing else. Stay tuned.

Just bought a 2001, Boxster S, with 60'000 miles.
Clutch has been changed at 55'000, ..but they did not changed the IMSB !!!
Before buying it, I asked to see the oil filter (cut in two parts) => no debris at all.
Still, my plan is to not play a 10-15k game at 1/10, so for 2k, I will get a "double row" kit installed very soon.

2001 Boxster S with variocam plus 3.6 with 55k miles. Started chirping like a bad water pump, bank one exhaust cam skipped one tooth. Single row bearing was intact but the bearings were no longer round and center stud was quite wobbly hence the skipped timing. Replaced with Pelican bearing using LN tool. Word of advice on three chain engines...pin the crank and bank one cams, do not try to do the job using set screws to hold the intermediate shaft in place. I had quite a time getting everything re-timed after the set screws slipped. I chose the Pelican solution primarily due to cost and I intend the replace it with every clutch change. If I was to buy a low mileage 997 I would do the oiled bearing solution and remove the problem entirely.

2001 boxster, 58800 miles... So sad & upset!
Called Porsche with the hope of replacing the engine under the lawsuite, but my car missed the date range by a few months.
Do I just let it go? Has anyone else experienced this?
