00-03 Boxster S or 05 up base?
I've been looking into Boxter S models along with 996's, and last night I thought I'd also look at the 05 up 987 base models with the 240 HP engine and 5 speed. Gotta say I was pretty impressed with the power it made. Is there any reason to go for the older S models over than the newer base models other than the bigger brakes, and a bit more torque? The interior and exterior is much nicer IMHO.

The only reason I would say is if you prefer the looks or price, I really don't think you can go wrong with ether one, in my opinion. Definitely try to get a PPI before you make your final decision. Good luck on your journey and keep us posted.

I would get a PPI no doubt. I know the 00-03 S model has 250 HP, and the 05 base has 240, but a little less torque. Just wondered if that plus the base not being an S would make it less valuable down the road, or anything like that. Also curious as to what engine has a better reliability history. I'm also looking at used 996's, but thought I'd check these out as well...

I owned a '99 with 201HP and a '01S with 250. In many ways, I preferred the lower HP. But I'd look at the reviews of the 2005 and a list of changes and see how important they are for you. And in the final analysis, it is your feeling about styling, price and the importance of power that will make the difference.
Will either become an appreciating classic...not for a long long time is my bet.
None of my first 3 sports cars had more than 100HP and I had fun with all of them. It is how you drive and where you drive that makes one car more or less desirable.

In canada, you might prefer the GLASS rearwindow of ANY 03 and newer Boxster vs the plastic window of the earlier cars.
986 "S" cars had 6spd trans, larger brakes, 3rd radiator vs the base cars.
986 vs 987 is personal preference. I like both, but the 987 feels more "modern" to me, at least from an aesthetic standpoint. The interior of the later car seems more cohesive.

I agree with this, call me crazy but the 987 look never did anything for me & I believe it's appeal will fade now that the "upgraded" Boxster is available. Dare I mention the 987 IMSB is not upgradeable without engine disassembly?
