Default Any interest in a windshield replacement DIY?

I'm planning to replace the glass in my Boxster, and I'll be happy to document the process if anyone wants to see it.

Sure, if nothing else it's always interesting to see something new.

I'd like to see what's involved, especially with the built-in antenna.

My windshield has some sand burn, so outward vision is poor when the sun is low.

Why not, it if it keeps you off the P & C forum for while

Germans use the softest auto glass! They get pitted at very low miles. Really annoying.

They always have. I've had some older cars (mostly e30's) that had absolutely horrible windshields. They weren't broken - just so hammered that they looked opaque.

Do not know where I came by this but my understanding is the 993 windshield and the Boxster windshield are rather different animals when it comes to installing a new one.

A Boxster DIY windshield installation would be of some help to you but I wouldn't trust it to be all the info you need to do a proper job on your 993 and in fact it might lead to do an improper job.

There has to be a 993 DIY windshield installation around somewhere given the age of the 993 and the number of them sold.

I had my 02 Boxster's windshield replaced and it was done in parking lot at work. I verified the glass was "factory" and the location of the various connections (antenna and rear view mirror bracket) were proper then tech went ahead and installed it. Couple of hours and he spent as near as I could tell the whole time with a cell phone to one ear while he worked.

I had my doubts but the job turned out ok and that was long enough ago the "new" glass is getting pitted and has a tiny crack and could be due for replacement one of these days.

Sincerely,

Macster.

During the process, I'd be interested in how to replace the plastic windshield trim that has discolored.

Can it be replaced without replacing the windshield or is it an integral part of the replacement process.

Thanks in advance.

What plastic windshield trim? When my 02 Boxster's windshield replaced just the glass along with the rubber gasket that bonded to the car's metal windshield frame and the glass (double sided sticky rubber gasket) was replaced.

If necessary the outer rubber weather stripping that goes around the windshield can be replaced, but it is not necessary.

AFAIK, at least on my 02 base, there is nothing else that needs replacing.

There are IIRC a few items that must be removed: cowl covers and wiper arms....

Oh, wait I think you are referring to the plastic pieces that reside at the base of the windshield between the trunk lid and the glass. These may have to come off to replace the glass -- it extends down quite a ways -- but I'm pretty sure they can be replaced without having to first remove the windshield.

Mine are a bit faded. But price new ones. I bet once you know what they cost to buy you can live with faded ones a while longer...

Sincerely,

Macster.

The trim I am refering to is only on the S.

It is silver, about 5 mm wide.

Hartops that were delivered for S models also have the same trim around the rear window.

Sorry for the bad cellphone picture.

Thanks for your help.

No sure of the specific years, but I thought all S hardtops matched the windshield trim and also have silver trim on the inside around the pull handle.

If they don't, they were either purchased separately as a non-S or the dealer included a non-S hardtop they had in stock. The window sticker would tell.

I really wouldn't recommend windshield replace as a DIY item.

Way too easy to do it wrong without even realizing it, 'till it's too late.

Not expensive to have a pro do it. Not worth DIY. Don't mess with this.

I owned a windshield business for 15 years, and worked in the industry for nearly 30 years.

It's an easy DIY if you use the proper tools and materials. This thread fell off the first page without a response, so I replaced the glass without taking the requisite pics. I'll do the next one.

As far as moldings are concerned - the black outer plastic molding can be purchased from the dealer seperately, but I'm not familiar with the silver-colored piece.

The 986 glass is a fairly simple install, but the 993 windshield is an entirely different animal. I would recommend that you allow a pro to replace that one.
