I've spoken to 3 dealership service guys and all have seen several. I've not ever heard "gee, i've never seen that problem"
I'm 2 failures for 3 cars.
I know another guy who had 2 failures and one guy on PPBB had 3. Are we unlucky??

I have a 2004 550 SE also, mine went last December, with 22k on the clock.
took them 28 days to get the car back, I got a new motor, we told it was very complete only part transferred to new engine was the serpentine belt. as to a being the "SE" spec I have my concern, and have told my dealership the same. we are also having a oil consumption that I seems high for the new motor. they are telling me that a quart every 2000 miles is normal. we know have 39k.
just got the car back this week after it was in for a bad syncro on 2nd gear. they gave me a new trans. was in the shop for 24 days.
thanks Rob Falkner.

Wow, Dennis! That sure sucks. Glad Porsche made some attempt to make amends. I have yet to read of an M96/97 engine actually wearing out. They fail, instead!
I guess the RMS is now a pretty common problem on the new 997 GT3s. Porsche needs to step up to the plate if these are, in fact, relatively rare to save their reputation.

We'll see how the 350 Z works out...I'm pleased so far.

I have been a Nissan Parts Manager for 10 years, since the 350Z has come
out we have done "1" engine and "2" manual Transmissions on the 350Z.
on the Roadster's the big repair has been the fabric for the Top. the complaint is that the seams are separating. we have done 5 or six in the last 3 years, all covered under warranty.
My 550 top is separating like the 350's have, dealer says Porsche will not warranty it.

FYI: I've owned 2 Nissan Pathfinders and never had any problems with them. I traded my first one in with >140K miles and my 2001 just turned 90K.
I'm sure your luck will be MUCH better with this than you've had with P cars.
Enjoy!

Nissan's are amazing cars!
My Mom put over 200k on her Nissan Quest in span of 8 years. In those first 200k all that ever broke a radiator line, only $150 R/R. Since 200k all the motor and tranny mounts have broken, the antenna and so on. But I can careless,I've never seen a car work almost perfect for 8 years straight and start up every single time.

I received the latest stronger bolts for my IMS, and also the latest RMS when I got my clutch and flywheel done recently on my '01 S. Gives me piece of mind. Ironically it seems to be happening more to low mileage cars then high mileage examples.
How can these cars (objectively) statistically significant be failing where loads of guys now are enjoying there 986's in e.g. boxster spec racing, autox... I don't get it... and am starting to believe that driving these beauties regularly "hard but smart" is key. My local P. specialist (Netherlands) has *never* seen an engine failure due to IMS, weird isn't it?

.....those new bolts you got were NOT the bolt that fails, they just hold the cover over the IMS bearing.
The bolt that fails cannot be replaced without a complete engine teardown. Sorry for that news.
Also my car was tracked and AXed, driven often (3 round trip cross country trips)...and failed..there is NO magic potion.
