Default Dealer wants $50 for Radio Code

The dealer sold my dad a new battery for his '01 Boxster S (and also charged $100 to install it). Now the radio doesn't work and they want $50 to get him the code. Has anyone had their dealer do this for free? I read the threads below and forwarded them to him but would like to know what other people have been charged, if at all.

Your code should be written in you radio booklet/card or sometimes is written by hand on your option sticker under your front hood. If that doesn't work try asking over on RENNTECH. Shame on your dealer for charging your father $100 to install the battery w/o the code. Most dealers will give you the code for free if you have proof of ownership.

With proff of ownership it should be free, unless you have them enter to reset it. I would think it should be part of the battery install.

Tell the dealer that you were not aware that Tequipment offered a ***** to screw potential customers with and take your biz elsewhere.

You must name the dealer for future reference.

Lujack in Davenport, IA (Quad Cities). I believe they are the only dealer in the area, at least they used to be. His salesman is a good guy - he's known him for 20+ years. Can't believe the b.s. the service area has given him about the radio. I live in AZ so I'm going to follow up with him today to see what he did after I've forwarded him the good information you've all given me.

Wait a minute, THEY changed the battery, there is a battery powered unit they use to hold the codes but some A*S at the dealership didn't use it....the codes for the engine are probably lost also, along with all the other menory functions.
What an absolute bunch of MORONS.....

A charge to get the radio code? Damn! I gotta tell you. In this day and age, with business being what it is, a dealer has two options. take good care of your customer base, or rape um and hope they come back for more! I'm guessing the latter for the dealer in question. We have a saying at our place. You can sheer a sheep may times, but you can only pluck a chicken once!

I called my local dealer (Scottsdale), told them I local PCA member, and asked what it would take to get the code for my dad. Their response: "About 3 minutes." Very nice and helpful! Over the weekend my dad is going to send me his VIN & Radio Serial number and they will provide it to me. I still think he needs to have a talk with the Service Manager at his dealership ... but that's his decision.

Thanks for all the input. My opinion is that's a sad way to run a business.

I'd suggest your dad should talk to his salesman. You say he's a "good guy" and your dad has known him for over 20 years, so I'd use him to run interference with the service dept.

They lost the code: they are responsible to replace it. Call Porsche North America customer service. I suppose they also charged to open the car door and for each turn of the wheel to get it into the service area. I would never go back to that dealer ever. I would still make them activate the radio while I looked on.

And to top it off they charged him $100 to change the battery. If you are real slow, I would imagine that would be a 15 minute service or $400 a hour. Maybe the mechanic use to be a lawyer, and believes he can charge the same rate that they do.
