Just Traded my SC for a Boxster
I just today traded my 82SC for an 03 Boxster at my local dealership. I was also looking at an 01 996 C4--and drove both. The Boxster was quite a bit cheaper and doesn't have the potential issues the 3.4 engine has. On country roads up to 5000 rpm, I didn't see a whole lot of difference--though that would change, I'm sure, on the track (which I don't do). The gearboxes on both cars (5sp, 6sp) are both great. The Boxster has a bunch of factory options including 18" turbo type wheels. Pirelli p-zero tires.
I will miss the classic look of the SC and those black Fuchs wheels. I won't miss the 915 gearbox, the CIS or most of the noise below 55 mph.

Congrats! I did essentially the same thing a few years ago (82 SC Euro for 00 S). The SC and Boxster are very different cars..and I love them both for what they offer. Trust me though, you'll love the Boxster!

However, I don't even get to drive the Boxster as much as I'd like...I don't know what I'd do with two "extra" cars. Probably better that someone else gets to enjoy it...it was fun.

I've got 4 cars now: 2000 Boxster S (something modern for doing duty with the SUVs), 1973 911T (owned for 19 years), 1963 Sunbeam Alpine (owned for 29 years), Sebring kit car built with my dad 30 years ago (was 5 cars, but sold the 356 after 3 years). I can tell you that less is more! And I wish I could do it. Having 4 cars to keep in batteries, tires, cleaned and waxed, and regularly driven gets to be a burden. Sometimes I wish I could part with them and only have one. Yes, I'm blessed to have them all (and want another 356 and an MG TC). But, I just wanted to express that you should weigh that regret against the fact that the grass is not always greener.
Then there is the issue that I don't own a car that I feel I can park anywhere . . .

I wish I'd traded my SC for my Boxster...instead I just bought the Boxster thinking it would be easy to sell the 911. Wrong. (..unless I want to give it away..) So now I'm selling the Boxster.
Dammit.

Just had my first full day with the Boxster. It's black with the Savannah beige interior. The suspension is softer than the SC, there is a lot more luxury and a lot less noise. And the gearbox is first rate.
It drives like a luxury car, but then it also can be driven like a sports car. The bang is as big or bigger than the SC. It is amazingly quiet for a convertible. The 25 yr old SC handles every bit as well--and the brakes might be better--though I had more pad left on the SC (90% vs 60-70% on the Boxster).
Stopping distance for the Boxster and 911 are similar and excellent. The Pirelli p-zero Russo tires have a tendency to flat spot in the rear (18" wheels).
I'm looking to sell the Russos (new in back, 75% in front), and put all-seasons on by the fall.

this would be heresy on the 993 forum, but i think my boxster sprints, handles, and brakes better than my 993 did. it doesn't have the same classic look or aesthetic of the 993, but i think it is the better car.

I've owned three different 911s in the past, and before I bought a 4th I decided to test drive a Cayman S. I really loved the car, but I knew that after awhile I'd miss top down driving. I live and work in the country and as you all know I'm sure, there's nothing like driving a convertible in the Spring when the weather is gorgeous. So I test drove a Boxster S, and then a Boxster. I was certain that I wouldn't like the Boxster because of the low HP and Torque, but to my surprise I fell in love with the car and best of all it cost me $12K less than the Boxster S.
If you buy a Boxster with minimum options, you can get one for the mid $40Ks after discount, and there's no car around in that price range that offers the driving experience of the Boxster. Granted that there are many cars in that price range and lower that are much faster in a straight line, but none can compete with the Boxster in terms of handling and interior and exterior fit and finish.
