Boxster owners... why won't you wave?

996 drivers are bad but I find that 9 times out of 10, Boxster owners ignore or refuse to return the Porsche wave. Why is this? YOU guys would all wave back, right? :D

Sean 03-05-2003 02:55 AM

Enthusiasts know about the flash / wave.

The older the Porsche, the more likely it is driven by an enthusiast.

A lot (obviously not all) of the people driving newer models (986/996) are not Porsche enthusiasts per se.

But as time passes, more and more enthusiasts will be driving Boxsters. So keep waving!

who u telling???..i have a Boxster S and i hardly get wave or should i say never from a boxster...most people pass me right by,i cant believe it..i flash or give the thumbs up to all porsches...986 gets the least return wave or flash..996 maybe, but the % is still low..and 993 forget it,i get the feeling they dont see use water-cooled p-cars as real p-cars..i have never recieved a wave, sometimes a snobbish look..but i have had some good encounters also, kinda puts a smile on your face for the rest of the day...i just think alot of people today arent real porsche enthusiasts...i definitly see so many more p-cars on the road today, not as rare as 5-10 years ago...well,ill keep trying...exc9llence i would flash you, your 912 is hottt..

Doug&Julie 03-05-2003 08:48 AM

Many Boxster owners are first time Porsche owners. Keep trying! ...the non-wavers will get it eventually.

Scott in Texas 03-05-2003 09:41 AM

Just keep waving. If you wave to me I will wave back.

Please do not assume the level of commitment or experience with Porsche cars by the car the person is driving. If you see me in my Boxster S you see a guy who has owned Porsche cars from 911's to 944 T S to Boxster S. When I talk to many other Boxster owners most that I meet are in the same boat. So yes there have been a ton of Boxsters sold and many of those folks are just getting into the experience of Porsche ownership but the next guy you think is a newbie just may be a PCA officer, a PCA racer and own many other Porsche cars. What is that old saying "you can't judge a book by its cover" perhaps that applies here.

That is funny. I find the opposite to be true, although it is 993 or 996 owners who most frequently don't smile/wave. Just don't see that many of the older models around.

Like the other fella said...who cares? Keep waving, and the friendly ones will wave back. I am not going to let the aloof ones spoil my fun.

PS This is my first post here...Whee! This is all I need...another Porsche board to monitor... <g>

Hey I wish someone would flash me because my girlfriend would flash you. I occasionally get waved at my other owners but not as much as I thought I would. But usually it is me catching up and looking over an seeing them smile and downshift and herring the lovely flat 6 02 cooled or h20 cooled rev up and take off.

For the record...yesterday was a beautiful day here in the Cinci area. (Did I just say that? ...it so rarely comes out of my mouth!?!) Julie and I were out in the Boxster with the top down enjoying our new ride. We came across two other Pcars, both 80's 911 Turbos. I waved to both! One guy happily waved, the other didn't. (But to be fair, the sun was in his eyes and he WAS paying close attention to traffic) So it happens....

Cheers!

I'm a new Boxster owner, and to be honest, I don't think people know about the wave/flash. Don't blame them if they don't return... flash me, I'll flash you back though!

Sean 03-09-2003 10:53 PM

Okay, another one for the record... This past Saturday was beautiful top down driving weather - clear and sunny. I was driving in my speed yellow Boxster S when - from about a mile away - I recognized a guard's red Porsche heading my way. Turns out is was a 944 Cab (presumably an S2 Cab).

So naturally, as the 944 Cab grew closer, I flashed. In exchange, I got....NOTHING! The 944 driver just went on past me without so much as a wave. No flash...no wave...zilch.

So I guess this begs the question: 944 owners...why won't you wave? :D

exc911ence 03-10-2003 01:23 AM

Hmmm... maybe it was an RX-7. I get THAT all of the time with my 924S...

Rich Sandor 03-10-2003 01:45 AM

Eh - Dave, come to Vancouver, you wave at a 986, you might get shot. No, just kidding, but 99% of boxster owners in Vancouver are NOT enthusiasts. They are just wealthy. Same with about 90% of 996 Owners.

Hell, even a 996 Enthusiast waving to another 996 owner will get dirty looks in return around here!

Sean 03-10-2003 02:04 AM

It was definitely a 944 Cab. Actually, I have seen this car before, on the same stretch of highway, several times. (I know the guy has returned wave to me when once when I was driving my 944.)

Now really, I don't blame the guy or feel snubbed. He probably was not paying attention or had other things on his mind.

One of the issues with waving to Boxsters and 996s is that - at least in my area - I see a lot more new Porsches than I do older models. So the new ones often do not grab my attention as much as the older ones, simply because the older ones are more rare.

If you see an older model, it's a good bet that it will be driven by a Porschephile. Let's face it - there are cheaper, more reliable, easier to maintain used cars on the market than P-cars. (Honda Accords & Civics come to mind.) If you drive an old Porsche, you had better love it! And if you love Porsches, you're probably gonna know about the flash, etc.

NetManiac 03-10-2003 01:31 PM

A) I am a new Porsche Owner/Enthsiast.
B) I didn't know about the wave/flash until visiting rennlist.com and learning about it.
C) If I don't wave back it's most likely that I am off in la-la land. It's not personal.
D) I try to wave/flash every Porsche I see now. 90% of the time I get nothing in return, but oh well, I'll keep waving/flashing.

This reminds of a time when I was out driving with a friend of mine (who knows about the wave/flash). I was focused on something else and didn't even notice a red Boxster coming at me so I didn't see the flash. My friend ask me why I didn't flash back. I was furious with myself. I cursed. I cursed again. I came within a hairs breadth of flipping a u-turn and chasing him/her down just so I could flash back (it happens so rare around here I didn't want it to go unrewarded). But in the end I figured he/she would have thought I was a nut job for doing that, possibly even reporting me (after all this is sue-happy Southern Cali), and I just kept driving, feeling guilty and inadequate as a Porsche for the rest of the day.

No point, just a story. Have fun, drive hard.

Gotta say that getting a wave or flash back can make my day.

I was out driving on a surface street in Phoenix when I saw a pretty 928 S4 coming the other way. I gave him a flash and, since his window was rolled down, as we passed he honked and gave me the "hang loose" hand sign out the window.

Made me feel great and really made my day.

I'm simple that way I guess.

Tons of Boxsters in Phx and never a wave. I agree with the first poster though...just because you OWN a Porsche doesn't MAKE you and enthusiast. I think you should have to pass some enthusiast test or something before you get the keys to a P-car.

Boxsters are great cars and I hope to see more P-car lovers in them (including me!).
