You're also forgetting more strict emissions and crash standards which definately makes it tougher to make a car with the exact same spirit/feel as that 550.

If I had to choose? Several things need to be considered. Boxster is a newer car, so parts will not be a problem. 944 parts are have started to climb in price (do not believe me? check how much the rear camshaft cover goes for now... it was 17.00 6 months ago, now it is 400.00). The 944 mechanics are simpler. I think that working diy on the Boxster due to the engine layout will be a challange, but I have no experience there. Someone that has could shed more light on this.
I simply could not choose... love both cars. Will try to own one someday... and a Turbo, and a 928, and a 914
