Cool 928 Appreciation Post Here

Thought I would start a new thread so people would not have to go so far to read good things about the the 928. <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />

Cool

Alan:
Thanks for the thought, but I suspect this thread will get as much action as a similar Boxster thread on any page for anything except Boxsters.

BTW, what did you do with your 911SC?

Ed, Sorry this will be off topic -- No 928 content... Regarding the SC -- I track it mostly and drive it as much as I can when I don't have to worry about heat or airconditioning. I already got in trouble here for saying it was more fun on the track then the Boxster. Boxster is very refined and inherently faster, but not faster on the track in its current configuration.

928 content -- one of the students had a very nice 928 with five speed this past weekend. Unfortunately not my student, so I did not get to drive it. He had some sort of radiator problem which made it interesting for a lot of folks.

I had the opportunity to see a 928 engine up close today - they were replacing it due to a catastrophic failure. They're real pretty engines with the valve covers clean! Smaller than I would have thought, actually. I wonder what that would cost?

I have also seen a 930 Turbo engine, freshly rebuilt, out of the car and it looked to be about the same volume as the V8.

I hope I never see my Boxster 3.2 this way, though.

I have owned 2 Porsche 928's. The first one was an 83 5spd that I had for 3 years. The second one was a 1991 GT(which by definition is a 5spd, 330hp, sport suspension, sport exhaust, etc.) it was one of about 150 cars for that year. The 91 was a wonderful car in every way. I took it to 11 DE events and 6 Autocrosses. The car was a champ on the track, but a bit large for the autocross. Boat loads of torque and plenty of power. I understand there is a stigma with these Porsches, but it really is unfounded and undeserved. The fact does remain, when the 928 was being sold new it was the flagship, the top of the line, most expensive Porsche. To repair and maintain the 928 is representitive of its flagship status(very costly), and that is why a lot of these cars are in a state of dis-repair. It is also the reason the resale value of these cars is in the toilet. My opinion is that for $15,000 or so there is no better pre-owned Porsche. None. For the same 15K you could have a beat up rusty old school 911. Whereas the same 15K will get you a sweet 928. This opinion is based on driving MANY 986's and 996's and older 911's as well.

Thanks for letting me give my two cents on the 928!

Talking

I must say, I expected no reponses to this thread. Clearly, if there is much more to come - it should be directed to the 928 page and not infringe on the 986 (or any other) page.

Having said that, I am please to see so many Boxsters being driven during good AND bad weather. Most Porsches are usually put in storage as soon as there's a morning frost. But 986 drivers seem to want to drive them regardless. Good for you! I too drive my Porsche every chance I get. I even drive it in light snow. (Heck, I was once a NYC hack, and some of the cabs I drove during the winter hardly had any tread on the tires. I didn't need practice on a skid-pad as I was doing it nearly three months of the year. )

Whenever I see another Porsche - I give it a flash. Most of the time, I get a response, but (for the most part) not from Boxster drivers. Why is that? Don't tell me you guys don't recognize another Porsche, or are you that self-absorbed?

BTW - I've owned 928s for over 12 years now. The cost of maintenance on a 928 can be horrendous, or it can be mild. For me, it's been mostly moderate. It comes down to how you take care of it. If you do the maintenance by the book, use quality parts and fluids, and keep them at the proper level, the problems should be few and far between. I'm sure this advice applies to any Porsche.

Ed,

With regards to the flash, I have the same issue with other P drivers also - 911, 928 or otherwise, not just Boxsters. When I am in my Boxster, I both return flashes and initiate theme but sometimes, by the time I reply, the other guy has passed my line of sight.

The other answer is we are just having so darn much fun in our Boxsters (which is true) we are sometimes "self-absorbed" as you say - or more accurately, P-absorbed.

Third answer is light doesnt travel fast enough

I too have owed several 928's and still yearn for Porsche to make this car again. However, as far as repairs, I diagree. I don't think the 928 is any more costly to maintain or repair than other Porsches. In fact, I spent more on my 97 993 in annaul maintenance and repairs. My current C4 is also more expensive to keep up than I ever spent to maintain me 81, 85S, and 89S4 928's.

Here some side by side pics of my 89 928 s4 and my brothers 05 Boxster S.....VERY little difference in size. Even I was amazed. We spent some vacation time driving side by side. Lots of fun.

Wow, I'm surprised that they are of similar size. Interesting.

Did you get a chance to swap cars at all? If so, what was your impression of the boxter? I have thought about buying one of the many that come available with a bad engine and making it my next project. Top down motoring. Yeah

His is the only Boxster I have driven and really its an 987 being the newer version. 285 Hp IIRC. A little quicker than the stock 928 at low speeds but at highway speeds the acceleration advantage goes to the 928. Nice car. The interior "feels" much smaller than the 928 and the driving position is much more up rite. Love the convertible top...my 928 has a sunroof but they are very small. Both are excellent handling in the corners.
