Brian, I guess I see your point, but I have been in a convertible car, And i like a coupe better, and the wind get's a little annoying after a while. I don't know, I guess it's because I feel much safer in a coupe and the car is lighter and more stable. Imagine if Porsche had a coupe version of the boxster? It would be lighter and it would probably feel more stable. That's just MO.

Silverbullet951, I do appreciate your view of performance, and I cannot say that I am not tempted by thoughts of a high performance coupe ... I just know that less than 1% of my driving experience would take advantage of the advantages inherent in a coupe, and I think that I'd really miss the open air (even the city driving in Vancouver is pretty scenic and smog-free).
Then again, put a performance machine in my garage (986S included) and I might just increasingly find ways to frequent local DE and AutoX events!!! A friend of mine (IanM on this board) has a modified 951 (325 rwhp @ 18 psi) that tempts me to switch allegiances (to a powerful coupe) every time he lets me drive it. Fun, fun, fun!

WOw, I would like that kind of HP on my 951! Anyway, I see what you mean, I must also say that I have never driven a boxster, so I really can't judge. I'm sure It's just as fun as any other porsche (But then again, once you've experienced the boost of a turbo porsche, there's no going back!).

I agree completely! I drove a 993 Cabriolet for about 6 months befor the "go-cart" feeling began to completely consume me. The thrill of top down driving simply wore off and I hated the car more and more each day I climbed into it to drive, especially becuase I really craved the thrill of fast driving. Top-down fast driving just comply sucked wind to me. I ultmately traded that 993 Cabriolet for a TT coupe (from Porsche to Audi thats how much I deplored the convertable experience)and life was good again. Now I am back into a Porsche coupe (sunroofed) and I am just LOVING LIFE all over again. <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />

Perhaps neither of you are aware that modern convertibles have roofs that can be put up!
I find it interesting that neither Carrera4 nor Silverbullets951 own or drive a 986 and feel the need to be negative towards the Boxster specifically and convertibles generally. In case you weren't aware, the Boxster ONLY comes as a convertible and why you would even be interested in coming to this part of the Board is beyond me. Your assertions that sports cars MUST have a hard roof certainly flies against Porsche's 550, considered by many to be a classic Sports car. This is not to mention the vast heritage of topless Sports cars ranging from MGs to Jags to Mercedes to Lotus (imagine a hard topped Super 7?? Yuck!) Sports cars are not made to simply drive fast, but quick, and provide a feedback that reflects the driving experience. Simply "going real fast" is no more sporting than Bear baiting.
In any event, the topless experience is certainly not for everyone, thank goodness!

I'm really sick of people that have never driven a Boxster coming down on it based on other convertible experiences.
993 cabriolets had terrible wind management. 996 are a little better. If you open the sunroof an a 996 coupe at 70-80mph there is a terrible tumping buffet that pounds away unti you lower a window.
The Boxster is a great drive with the top down. None better. The wind deflector and tall glass give a a very calm "pocket" from which to drive. I've driven z3's, new vettes, s2000's, slk's and 993 cabs and 996 cabs and none of them compare to the Boxster with top down. I've done 140 with the top down and it is no big deal.
I'll remember all you coupe drivers tonight when I go out for a evening spin with the top down in the cool autumn air.
Go ahead and talk. I'm going driving.

IMHO Boxsters are great cars w/superb handling, if I didn't need a a backseat an "S" could very well be in my garage. Just an FYI, 996 cabs have the same drag and lift coefficents as the coupes, they are virtually as stiff and a C4 Cab only weighs 33 lbs more then a C4S. They also feature (as I'm sure Boxsters do as well) a supplemental restraint system that monitors acceleration, gravity, and angle of inclination and is automatically deployed in a fraction of a second.
You can also get a windscreen, 140 + no problem.

You know Silverbullet951, it is really a shame that you post like this and can't read too. I like 911s too - so you are partly right, I am a diehard... Porsche fan. All kinds, topup or down. Don't care. Love 'em all. Try it, you might like it.
And if it's just talking, then why are you the one that has to shout (check your posting etiquette - upper case is a clear sign of losing it!)
I'm outta here with Boxster 3.4 - there appears to be some P envy going on and I'm not sure which P is involved.
Of course, we're just talking...

I HAVE tried it, That's why I'm talking. I'm not degrading porsche, just the fact that some sports car fans (like Me) prefer to have a sports car which is a coupe. You people automatically jump to conclusions that we are degradig the boxster. I just happen not to like convertibles. I don't like the feeling. That's my opinion. You can't force me to like them can you? Just because I don't like, you have to attack? What is the matter with you? It's just an opinion. Am I attacking you when you say you like convertibles? NO. SO calm down, it's just a little discussion.

THIS IS INSANE!!! Is it insecurity that prompts owners of other Porsches to come to this board and bash the Boxster? Since I own two models, and instruct in all models, I have had opportunity to drive many on the track. I don't believe that Porsche model bashing is appropriate from owners of other Porsches. I started the 928 appreciation thread sort of tongue in cheek, because it seemed that 928 guys needed somewhere else to wax eloquent about their cars -- should have been generic. Why don't you tell us, like Ed did, why your Porsche is the best, not why the Boxster is so lacking.

It is getting to the point now where I personally suspect that people just want to get the last post in on possibly the longest thread ever!
Don't waste your effort guys - it will be me. In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger in some crap movie: 'i've got nothing else to do, and nowhere else to go. We are going to hang out till the end of time'.
Have a good weekend all!

Yea, that's true, Boxsters against everyone else. It's actually getting kind of boring now. All, of these boxster owners have the same mentality. They bought a new porsche, because it's the only NEW porsche they can actually afford, and they think they're GODS. Oh well, Let them have their fun.
