Default Boxster Questions

Hi Guys,
I have a 73 911 as my toy but lets face it the older 911's are not the easiest thing to drive for a large footed 6'2" big German. I have been thinking about a boxster as a dailey driver. I notice the prices all ove the board on these things and they seem to be fairly priced when compaired to other Porshes of the same year. What is the story on the cars? why so cheap? on a stock car, does it have get up and go? are they under powered in terms of a porsche? i guess what raises my eyebrow is why so cheap? I am thinking about a mid to late 90's model.

I have a 2001 Boxster, purchased in December with 296xx miles on it. Now up to 306xx miles, use it as a daily driver, weekend runner to the mountains and/or beach. I'm 6ft 1in and weight 200 (or so) pounds. Car has plenty of room, plenty of power, more than enough to get in trouble with the local police/highway patrol. I haven't regretted buying the car since the moment we got it. I took it to the dealer for it's 30k service and checkout, and the car was in perfect shape.

Sadly the Boxters are slowly going the same dirrection that the 944/951 and 928s did 10 years ago. The only Porsche that seems to keep its value is the 911. However, this is not a bad thing if you are in the market to buy one.

Base price on a 2001 Boxster was around $42,000, most had sticker prices around $50,000 with options. So after five years or so, they can be bought for $20,000 to $25,000. Is this cheap, probably not.

If you can, go for a 2000 or newer. There were some nice interior improvements made in 2000 as well as the base went from 2.5L to 2.7L, and the 3.2L S was added. The 3.2L S has the 911 brakes and 6 speed tranny and performance-wise is comparable to the previous generation 911. At 6'2", you should fit, but not by a whole lot. I think some of the 1999s had cylinder sleeve problems, and rear main seal leaks are semi-common, but otherwise they are relatively trouble-free. Be sure to get it thoroughly checked out before buying, of course. The handling is excellent stock, and if you mod it, the handling can be out of this world.

No offense taken, drive a Boxster and once it's warmed up, floor it and shift at 7000 rpms and you'll be hooked! If you have a chance to drive it on some twisty roads, you might not give it back!

They're not under powered for Porsche, and they still don't depreciate as fast as most cars. Porsche has never really been a powerful "stock" automobile. Most of the truly powerful ones are that way because of an active owner who has altered the heck out of it. It's a great car and I think you'll enjoy the heck out of it.

Btw, my wife is also 6'-2" and fits beautifully in the Boxster. She loves the car, and even after 3 years she just said last week there's nothing she doesn't like about her car.

boxster and 996 prices are showing some settling now as they are just moving out of the Porsche centers and becoming more generally available in normal resellers.

the "normal" dealers don't milk the prices so the cars are relatively cheap.

The boxster is a great everyday car and the remote boot lock (trunk lock) is the greatest ivention in the civilised world.
