can anyone tell me WHY I should buy a boxster?
 

currently I have a 944 turbo pushing 260 hp, handling is superb, and when that turbo kicks in (DAMN) :eek: . But its almost 20 years old and the little things are naggling me (20 yr old plastic breaks easily) and I have grown tired of chasing leaks. The car over all remains solid but I am possibly looking to something new - possibley a boxster. My only real opposing thought is that the 944 have goobs of power upgrades (360 hp is only $1,300 away) and I am addicted to speed now. Plus it is a fairly easy to work on vehicle (as long as changing the clutch is not involved) - someone please convince me why? push me over the "buy a 986" edge.

You can buy the Boxster and keep the 944 too. Best of both worlds. :)

not an option - I have a 99 jeep wrangler sitting on 37 inch tall tires (over 7 feet tall) costly as hell and gets 14mpg (down hill)- so my second car must be for gas mileage and sporting fun. 3 cars is a bit much. - by the way mellissa nice rims

Seriously though. Man the Boxster is fun as hell, and I only have a 97. They get WAY more fun the newer they get. Sounds like you have a need for speed. Get the newest possbile one you can afford as they have some serious performance!

gas mileage in my BoxsterS is not so great. I get about 300 miles on a full tank which cost $30 last week. not sure how many gallons the tank holds.
But Miata and S2000 aside, I don't thinik you'll find a better roadster as a daily driver and get excellent handling performance/reliability.

I don't know. I get about 26MPG. I usually fill up at 1/4th left and that usually equates to around 280ish miles give or take. Usually costs me around $25 at the current gas rate. My 95 Camaro used to get 28/29 mpg for the same commute. I was impressed I got 26mpg with htis model considering it isn't a wimpy car by any means (even at a MY97) so it should be using a fair amount of gas. I do a mix of highway and local with a lot of the highway being stop and go. I don't mind this gas consumption rate considering all I get from it as a car on all other points.

I have a 944 and like those cars also. But the Boxster is a generation ahead. The 944's roots go back to the 924 project of the mid-1970s. There's a lot of forward thinking design in the 986.

I've driven a lot of P-cars (993TT, GT3, 951, etc.), but haven't found one more fun than the Boxster S.

The only way to truely get a good idea of why to buy one is to test drive one. I was sold a few blocks after I test drove mine. Only thing I can say is I still drive with the top down at 40 degrees,with my scarf flying behind me wearing a matching beenie. My friends call me gay for the scarf thing,but my **** faced grin is still there everytime I step out the car(I've had it 3 months). I have driven alot of cars,but the Boxster is just too much darn fun and I dropped all other choices as soon as I drove it. Granted it doesnt have 911 speed(but by no means is it slow),but it can out handle 911s. I can honestly say that the Boxster is the best thing to happen to me in awhile,granted Iam still young. All this and I only have a '99 with 53k and no mods. JUST TEST DRIVE ONE,if you arent sold on it at first dont buy one.

Well, lets say just for the sake of argument that you buy a Boxster S.

Your 944 turbo makes 260hp according to you, and weighs right around 3000lbs.

The Boxster S makes 250hp and weighs 2850 lbs.

It's hardly like you're going from a "fast" car to a "slow" car, we're talking small differences. The advantages you'll see are of course a much more modern car, a much sharper handling car (lighter weight, stiffer, etc etc), and overall a much more "comfortable" car - of course this comes with a pricetag, but it's absolutely NOT a step down from a 944. (FYI my last car was a 944 S2 Cabriolet)

More responsive steering, more responsive engine, better brakes, traction control, infact about 25 years worth of engineering improvements.

...and it is more fun to drive.

other than that, not much.

Don't feel bad, i get about 8mpg in my modified 928S, lol.

Costs about 90 bucks to fill the tank.

I highly doubt a Boxster will outhandle a 944.

The 986 has greater torsional rigitity than a 993 coupe.

I don't know the stats for the 944, but it's a safe bet the Boxster is much more rigid. That stiffness, combined with mid-engine weight balance, makes for a great handling car. In Road and Track's recent sports car comparison, the 987 S achieved the highest slalom speed ever tested by the magazine, faster than the Ferrari Enzo.

I think you're incorrect - the 951 is a heavier, softer car with an older suspension; the Boxster S will stop better, turn in sharper, and be more stable at speed.

Having owned both, these are just my observations.
