boxster engine
a friend of mine has a 99 boxster and the engine blew on a simple downshift. Car has 40K miles on it and dealer won't warranty the engine. They want $11K to put a new engine.
Any suggestions for a cheaper alternative? Used boxster or boxster s engine/tranny? used 911 engine? many thanks

nope, i'd say that is the cheapest alternative... as you probably know the 99's are known for engine failure... my 99 engine blew after accelerating from a light... my mechanic WAS going to drop a 911 3.4 engine into it for $14k, but instead he's putting a boxster S engine in it with a re-programmed ECU & cold air intake.. he says it'll push 310 fwhp.. tell him to start saving his lunch money.. =D

...if original owner, and it is a slipped sleeve, I would really press this issue. IT IS A KNOWN FAULT. These cars built between Oct '98 and March/April '99 have some sleeved motors, and some of them fail, and Porsche knows this.....they usually give original owners a break...Let your dealer know, you know of this fault...BE NICE, but BE FIRM..
But first you have to know the nature of the failure...my bet is slipped sleeve.

Really dent think you will see 310 HP from a chip and cold air intake. You might see 8 or 10 extra unless your going to spin the engine to nine grand. I am sure it will sound like its making more. Dyno before and after.

yea it seemed like alot.. 310.. i dont know.. but i read a story that someone posted on here explaining that a well tuned boxsterS engine could compete with a boxster and a 3.4 911... hmm wish i could find it...

You will need the right headers too, but it still won't be 310hp, more like 280-285hp.

FYI my motor replacement cost me about $8600. That was from my dealership (Joseph Nortland Porsche in Cinci) and with some help from my 10% PCA discount I get at that dealership. They put in a Porsche remanufactured motor (original 2.5 layout) that comes with a two year warranty. Even w/o the discount, $11k sounds a little high. But I don't know the labor rates, etc. of that dealership.
