2007: Value of 1997 Boxster w/75k miles?
 

This is inspired by a poll running on the 911 board as posted by Jack Olsen. I'm just curious what people think about values for the original Boxster as the new model arrives and the 10-year anniversary nears. Let's posit the car as your classic silver metallic car with black leather interior and 5-speed manual, driven about 7,500 miles/year (which strikes me as moderate, if not downright optimistic), full service history, no accidents, minor blemishes.

I think the car will be in the $10k-$12k range, myself, but I don't think it will go lower than that until it's 15 or so - more likely, the SC and Carrera might dip as the Boxster comes to be seen as a better bargain.

I have to think it will bottom out around mid teens. Even without the power, there's just too much car to go lower than that. Of course, I've been wrong before.... :rolleyes:

I agree that it's a lot of car for the money, but so are the 928S4 and the 944 Turbo. I think the Boxster will suffer their fate as they develop a rep for being high maintenance or having expensive issues. That might be undeserved - imo it is - but I feel the same way about the other two.

What I think will prop up 1997 Boxster values is 1) they're all cabriolets and 2) they're faster and more comfortable than comparable 911s. With nice, cheap Boxsters avaiable, nobody will pick a ratty SC or early Carrera - they'll drive down the prices of grade 2- or below cars; nor will people that want a cab settle for a coupe or targa. In two or three years, I expect all 911 prices to take a serious hit for cars from 1974-1986 unless the car is a low-mile, 2 or better example.

i feel for boxster owners whose cars are not worth what they should be, but this low market really speeds up my future 986 purchase and carrera engine swap. somebody has to benefit from this phenomenon :)

I saw a '97 advertised for $13k today - high miles (128k) but still the lowest I've seen a good condition car for. There are 46 cars on Autotrader for less than $20k, 22 of them for less than $18k, 7 of that number less than $17k..

those are asking prices, if someone is really interested, they will get the buyer to come down a grand or two.
