Talking newer car

have run a 97 boxster, up to 260,000 k,s and am thinking of a newer car. boxster or cayman. going to an 09 will dodge the ims bullet, but i am now hearing about cylinder scoring, any thoughts???

From a lot of reading and talking to some smart people, I’m starting to think the 06-08 cars are the real bargain. You get the robust IMS bearing, and don’t have the myriad of niggling issues associated with direct injection. Oil OEMs are having oil contamination issues due to DFI.

The 09-12 base 2.9L does not have DFI. For track use the 9A1 would be my choice over M97 for the improved oiling.

Interesting. Given 9A1 failures and repairs are in their infancy, I’d still prefer an M97 with the big IMS bearing. We know those are quite tough.

not for track work its not. The oiling issues are a real problem on the m96/97 series engines. The 9a1 is a far superior design.
