2000 Boxster S widebody-- good buy??
There is a 2000 Porsche Boxster S Widebody Roadster Tiptronic Triple Black 68k Miles. They are wanting $14,787 for the car. Does this seem like a good deal? I was looking to spend around 10k but found this car. The dealer that has the car is not a regular porsche reseller as it was a trade in. I asked about the IMS bearing and they had no idea. Also looks like the car was in an accident in 2003.

That's really nice looking, although I'd want to remove the rear spoiler and go with something a bit more low-key.
I'm not sure if that's a good deal or not.
I'd definitely have to look it over and check it with my Durametric before spending that much.

Yes I also think the spoiler is way to big.
Wife wants a tip to be able to drive it when she wants. lol. Im thinking if its 10k then I would jump on it.

I agree with TexSquirrel about the appearance; like it except for the big rear wing.
I think the market for a heavily modified car like this is pretty small so I think you can negotiate it quite a bit cheaper especially if no records come with it
most likely the entire car has been repainted. that wouldn't deter me at all though.

They went down to 14k only. They "said" they were offered $13500 and passed on it. really like the car but not sure if its worth it. They dont have any service records with it.
There is a local car in Houston that is a base model for 10k that has 32k miles on it. its stock. red/tan.. That is my alternative but I just think the black one looks so much more aggressive in styling and I wouldn't need to mod it any. Just dont know

Let me know if you run across any lower end 986s in the Houston area.
I'm looking for a cheap 986.
Higher mileage is fine, just nothing badly wrecked.

The mods look tastefully done except for that atrocious spoiler. Too 'boy racer' look for me. Someone spent a bunch of money on it and it may very well have been modded because of the accident. Without more info about the accident and a proper PPI you have to assume it will need updated service and that could be pricey. Also, its the middle of winter so I am surprised the dealer isn't budging, but since they don't even know what an IMS is they likely have no clue about what common issues there are with a Boxster. My guess this car will be sitting with the dealer till spring unless they are willing to negotiate.

Its a beautiful top-down day today for certain.
Dealers don't have to worry as much about winter sales slumps down here.
Most salespeople wouldn't know an IMS from an AOS.

Different strokes for different folks but I do not believe in paying extra for mods and in fact I believe they subtract from a car's value. They bring with them the question their quality and how well they'll hold up over time, etc. Often times when there is an accident the owner uses this as an excuse to mod the car with the concern to me is that he doesn't focus enough on making sure the car is brought back to its pre collision condition but instead on the new look.
But if you like the car's look that is all the matters. Well, that and its condition.
I didn't visit the Carfax link. Do you have any idea of the type of accident? Have to mention an accident back in 2003 as long as the car is not manifesting any real signs of any issues may be a non-issue.
Best advice I can offer is to give the car a thorough road test first experiencing the car as a passenger as the seller takes you on a 15 mile test ride then as a driver as you retrace the route. You must spend time with the car in its natural state with the car being driven, with you driving the car, as you intend to use it.
Afterward the test ride and drive you test every system to make sure all work. Then ideally after this you get a PPI at least get the car in the air so a close check can be made for any signs of leaks. Also, it should give the person making the PPI the chance to assess what accident repairs have been made and from this the severity of the accident can be estimated.
For price my advice is to visit www.kbb.com and www.nada.com and plug in the car's numbers and see what wholesale/trade in values come up. This is what the seller has in the car. This is where you should start your price negotiation but not until you are sure the car is worth owning.
For the IMSB it is not surprising the seller doesn't know about this. Often non Porsche dealers end up with a Porsche and treat it like a halo car using it to attract show room floor traffic. The car is priced pretty high because the dealer doesn't live or die if the car sells or doesn't sell and if it sells at the high price the salesmen gets a nice hefty commission.
But you know about the IMSB and if you believe the car needs this attended to for preventative maintenance's sake then adjust your offer to take this into account. Remember, price is not fact only an opinion.
My preference would be to search for a stock/unmod'd car with no accident history. I would prefer to find with with the IMSB untouched and then if I felt this needed to be done have it done right after I bought the car.

I found a shop that can perform a PPI at reasonable rate and there checklist to be very thorough. RAC Performance. Got them off the board be searching and they are nearby. If the dealer goes down on price then I will get the PPI done. The dealer doesnt deal with exotic cars or even car.. they are a truck dealer so they believe that this car is worth $$$. the tradein value is worth about $7500.00 on kbb for stock car.
