Not likely. Drive and enjoy, don't worry about future value and collectibility.

Well, technically it is already a classic. Will they see massive spikes in price? Probably not. But, like all things Porsche they will rise in price. As the cars get thrown away “because it isn’t worth it to fix them” the market will slowly change, and values will go up. Every single Porsche built, with the exception of the newer cars, has issues of one sort or another. People know about them, they fix them. Just like the 986/996... and like all previous cars, these will too have their day, particularly as the world changes to electrics and hybrids. As far as parts go, there will be no shortage anytime soon...

Investment wise, when you consider the cost of insurance, storage, regular maintenance, etc. I doubt these will return more than your 401k (even now!). Your $10k Boxster S might be worth $20k in 5 years but your sunk costs will be much higher than $10k. Drive and enjoy.

Yeah, there is difference between values going up and profitability. These cars will most likely never be "profitable" on the whole. I would argue that even the air-cooled cars (not all) are not exactly "profitable" from a cost of ownership perspective. Now, buying a 911 now for the right price might pan out to be "profitable" but I wouldn't stake my long term money on it.

914 better quality than a Boxster? That's a joke. In it's day it was nothing more than a glorified VW!

I have owned 3 914’s over the years and they were a blast. If you spent time with one, you would realize that Porsche massaged the VW parts just enough to make them different. I would trade my Boxster S for another one in a heartbeat.

As far as I can tell the 914 is already gone. I haven't seen one on the road in years.

no reason to debate the 914 vs Boxster issue. They are both (Not A Real) Porsches and both great cars. just different generations; neither will be forgotten. IMHO the base 986 Boxster will be similar to the base 914 one day - worth a few dollars for the low mileage survivors with a small cult following, just like 914s nowadays

The Boxster is more of "Real" Porsche than the 914, because it shared a lot more of the parts that went into the 911.

Hmm, not a “real” Porsche? Qualify that please? Considering Porsche themselves credit the Boxster for saving the company, (914 can’t claim that) and they are releasing resto S’s... I think you may be mistaken.

I'm an old 911 guy. For 30 years (non stop), my daily were 911, a few of these.
Why ?
It was in my opinion the BEST compromise car, i.e.: a cabin with 2 little seats on the back, a real sport handling, and would drive everyday perfectly well.
I.e.: I used these to drive my kids at school every morning. Can go golfing by having two bags in the back, etc..

One day, (in 2013) I traded in my last 911 (a 2002 996 C4 Cab that I had for 11 years) against a Panamera (a 4S), ..and it was the end of my 911 "era" !
But, missing the "no roof" and the stick shift, few months after the Panamera, I added an old (2001) Boxster S, not having the cabin room problem anymore.
This Boxster is simply the best handling Porsche that I had, love it, and use it in real sport mode (i.e.: 1/3 of usage are miles driven on track !)

I'm a guy that never criticized Porsche for having made Cayenne (or now Macan). The Cayenne SUV is simply a fabulous Porsche and the brand just did the right thing to go this way.
In the past, they had the 914 (imo a super great car too), and when I feel it was 100% right to have the badge be "VW Porsche" for the 4 banger, I also feel that the 914-6 was a REAL Porsche.

One thing that I would like to mention : I will NEVER buy a "Porsche 718", as in my opinion, this is a GREAT mistake, the 718 should have been marketed as a VW Porsche.
Do NOT tell me that pollution and CO2 are the reason of such decision at the VW group, as, for example, at Audi, since 2018, the R8 are not available as V8 anymore, ..they are "all" V10 since 2010 !

Or, to summarize my view :
I just cannot believe that Porsche have emasculated the BEST handling car in the range (Boxster) to make it a 4 cylinder.
(Cayenne was 100% right, but 4 cylinders Boxster is 100% wrong.)

it's a joke. Haven't you ever heard of club NARP? it's a sideways compliment aimed at purists who think the air cooled 911 is the only real Porsche ever made.
