Default Damned IMS failure. @74,000 miles

Lost motor Saturday. Thought IMS risk was behind us, given mileage, regular driven use.
Now what? Thinking a 3.4 should go in.

I'm not sure what the photo is showing. What tells you it is the IMS that failed? Just curious what the indications are.

You have my sincerest sympathy.

3.4L engine? Is that's what in the car now? I ask because if you want to install a newer (3.4l) engine is an older car that can be a bit of a problem. Maybe Pelican has a write up on what's involved and it may not be that much of a problem, but you need to know before you source the 3.4l engine.

Generally it is best to use an engine from the same MY year or years. For instance for a MY 2000 to 2003 car use an engine from a 2000 to 2002 donor car.

Yeah, I'd stay with the same series like Macster says. Part of a "keep it simple stupid" attitude. I'd rather drive mine than work on it. Which with Tucsons summer heat, I'm not doing much of either.

2000 boxster s. Has the 3.2. Our local dealer has done several engine swaps. Guy who owns it has a new GT3 crate motor in his. Took a ride on track in a 97 that they put a 3.8 in. Holy smokes was that fast! The 3.4 is relatively easy, electronics can match up pretty well, Pelican Parts has good write up. My tech is looking into options, have a line on a potential 3.2 with low miles- would be the obvious answer if it works out.
Anyone else do the 3.4 or 3.6?

we learned an expensive lesson trying to install a low mile 2003 Boxster S engine in a 2004 Boxster, after switching the complete suspension and installing the engine and transmission we nor the dealer could get it to run, finally figured out the the 2003 and 2004 engines and wiring were totally different, had to purchase a 2004 used engine and install. NOW we have a perfectly good 2003 Boxster S engine sitting here waiting for a donor car to put it in, will only fit 2000-2003

I rebuilt the engine in my 2000 "S" 8 years ago with 3.6L LN sleeves & JE pistons, with no other modifications it adds 40 ft.lbs of torque at low rpm's. This totally transforms the driving experience, the extra torque allows you to make 90 degree low speed turns in 3rd gear instead of 2nd. I have a duplicate engine for sale on this forum. This does not require any modifications to the stock configuration, just R&R the engine.

I didn't know my IMSB was failing in my original engine due to a small crack in one of the heads. Now my car has the LN triple row IMSB.

How do you properly support such a motor? Seems the intake should be a 911 intake, what about fuel lines, fuel pressure regulation, and DME mapping to ensure proper fuel mix ratio?

It is 100% plug & play for 2000-20002. The DME self adjusts, probably easier than driving up a mountain. While the engine is out it's easy to install a 987 air cleaner housing & 996 Throttle body. Porsche's have always suffered from a lack of low rpm torque. That's why as the newer Porsche's get heavier the engines get bigger. It's a good idea to have your fuel injectors pressure cleaned & tested while they are out, other than that they are fine as is. This engine will work in a 996 also you just need to drill & tap some holes in the heads. The head & block castings are the same.

Byprodriver's engine would be the best engine to put in. Not only would it be a monster, it would eliminate reliability issues. I'd do it, but the $15,000 price tag is not in the cards for me. Probably a good 3.4 is gonna be up there, too. And I'd want to be damned sure that it would work in my car. A good low mile 3.2 with a new IMSB would be a good choice from a price standpoint.

I replaced mine (overheated a few times) with a middle aged (60K) factory rebuilt engine. It had the later (about 2005) vintage IMSB. I found it for about $2500, which was more in my neighborhood. I had to pull one of the head covers to replace one of the cam solenoids, now it leaks oil. Poop! Probably will pull it back out to correct that in the late fall if I can't fix it in car. I don't need a fire breathing monster, just a reliable car. Gotta invest in a bunch of brake clean to find the leak.

1998-2001 3.4L engines have the thinnest, weakest cylinder walls & the 2000-2001 versions have the thin cast heads, that crack easily when overheated.
