Default 986 Telescope Adjustment Will No Longer Lock - Ideas?

Greetings all. 15 year 944 owner who's just moved to a Boxster so learning a whole new car....

My 99 has an issue with the telescope function. With the locking lever unlocked, it telescopes in and out as I would expect it to - no apparent issues with the movement. However after fully latching the lock, I am still able to relatively easily slide the wheel in and out. Done some googling and looking on RL and have seen a couple of others with this issue, but no one has a definitive cause or solution that I can find.

Any ideas on this? Before I pay my wrench 2 or 3 hours to investigate and try to fix it (he has not seen this before) is there something simple that I can DIY? Or are these non-serviceable and start looking for a salvage unit.

Thanks in advance.
