Is the 986 ans 996 Tiptronic the same?
Simple question, is this the same transmission? Is it controlled by the DME or a separate brain? Anyone got some idea on this?
The reason I ask is I am considering swapping a 2.7 from a 986 tiptronic with e-gas into a 2001 996 tiptronic. I have a DME that came with the 2.7 engine as well. I assume the same model DME (7.2) has the same pin out and harness connectors. I know the engine harness needs to swap across from the 3.4. Any light on this swap is VERY welcome. Looks like there's a difference in opinion. I would suggest checking with an Indy Porsche shop. I sure don't know the answer.
BTW, the picture above has an engine that's wired for a standard trans. The harness for the Tip is very different. And the vacuum lines are somewhat different. I'm currently doing the engine wiring swap on an 01 to make a standard wired engine into one that's set up for a tip. Scary indeed! |
Both the 986.1 and 996.1 uses the ZF 5hp19 transmission. The 986.1 uses a 5hp19FL and the 996.1 uses a 5hp19HL which mounts and turns in the opposite direction. They both share many internals and rebuilt parts but are obviously not interchangeable. They both use a separate controller/computor to operate the transmission. |

Does that mean that the 996 engine spins counter clockwise? Why would anyone put a 2.7 in a car that came with a 3.4?
The reason someone would put a 2.7 into a 996 is because a 2.7 is about 1/3 the price of a 3.4. |
