No such thing as a cheap Porsche ... is an old Boxster the answer?

And this is why it's so important for the OP to actually drive both cars and determine what he likes best for himself. Our opinions on 944s and long-distance comfort couldn't be more different. Possible that our cars were set up differently (but S2s and Turbos had virtually the same suspension from the factory), more likely that we just have different parameters to judge this sort of thing.

Admittedly, mine was set up for street/track by a P.O. But I'm also old and brittle.

No question a boxster will enjoy cheaper running costs than a 944. I've owned my 944 for 15 years, it's been a reliable car overall, but has a far longer list of "gotchas" and preventive maintenance to stay reliable. In four years with my 986 I've done a water pump, ignition switch, oil changes, serp belt, brake flush, will need an AOS soon, but that's really it. Just a better drive overall than the 944 as well. The 944 is still a great drive but the Boxster has two generations of development over it, and it's pretty evident. Great cars from different eras.
