If I had the money I would buy these:

I already have a Meridian home cinema system that is awesome for Movies and Music, but it is nowhere near their reference system.

Here are my top ten faves that I've owned over the years.

1. Large Advent. One of the best values ever. Deep punchy bass with the right amplification.
2. ESS AMT1B. Really fun to listen to. Great transient response and midrange definition.
3. JBL L166. Amazing rock and roll speaker. Kicks the 4311's butt, in my opinion.
4. Magnepan MGiiC. Big, deep soundstage you can see into. Not very engaging at low volumes, though.
5. Celestion Ditton 33. A very good all rounder. I chose it over the JBL L110 at the time. A bit too polite for me.
6. Vandersteen 1C's. Very coherent and musical. I used it with a Rotel RA970 integrated amp and RCD855 CD player. Huge bang for the buck. Absolutely huge.
7. Pioneer Elite TZ9 Very loud and dynamic and bright. The tweeter eventually wore me down.
8. B&W Nautilus 800. Phenomenal resolution. Never really sounded like it was cut from one cloth.
9. Klipsch Forte's. Not the last word in accuracy but tons of fun. I still have them hooked up in the basement. A couple of Smithwicks and some Van Morrison...
10. Vandersteen 5A's. Haven't found much to fault other than cosmetics. They take forever to set up, but when they're set up correctly, I'm not sure they can be bettered by much.

I have a set of 803s but not the Ds. They're lovely and I love them but I didn't pay retail either. I use them in our media room with 805s as the rears.

The only thing they lack IMO (only nominally- very nominally) is bass response. But I have a subwoofer with them, 801s with a sub in the LR and am very spoiled so take that with a grain of salt. I would recommend them to anyone without hesitation and I'm sure you'll have years of enjoyment. But they're your ears hence I hesitate to recommend any speaker.

If you really want 802s or 801s you might want to consider used. They frequently show up on Audiogon at a fraction of the new cost. Also the 803Ds are the same three way ported design of the 803s. But they've enhanced the tweeter using diamond (i thought it was already perfect). They come in three colors, gloss black, rosenut and walnut (I think they call the walnut cherry- it's a lighter finish). I have the rosenut ones but in that room would have preferred the walnut. All are beautiful just a matter of taste.

I initially used the 42's for my surround system. Very nice for the $$ until I upgraded to the Dali Helicon's which knocked my socks off for a HT.

Come to think of it I still have a Dynaudio 122C center channel if anyone is interested.

I am a big Apogee fan and have had a pair of Centaur Majors since the late 90's and still love them. Also have had Mini Grands as well.

I love the B&Ws. If you're worried about $ go to Audiogon. I also love the Dynaudios, Wilson's and Avalons.

I must admit that 43 year old Bozak Concert Grands ( my pair are dated 1968) are jaw dropping. If you have the room for them. I was lucky enough to find a pair just a couple months ago. My 30 year long speaker search is over.

I think it would depend on what you are listening to most of the time? Movies or Music ? 2 channel or 7-1 channel etc?
