Best Head/NAV swap for 981

Our 2013 981 Boxster's NAV module died.

Who has done an aftermarket swap with CarPlay, Apps, etc?

What unit?
Fit and finish?
Adapted to use console control buttons?
Pics?

Thanks!

Eric

Hi Eric, do you know what factory audio system your Boxster has? That will make a big difference when it comes to the integration. Also, do you have a multi-function steering wheel or just the right-hand stock control for the radio?

The window sticker has the following PCM info:

CDR audio system, 7” color touch screen, 4-speaker, 2 x 25 watt
AM/FM dual tuner radio, single in-dash CD drive, MP3 & AAC WMA compatible

under options:

Infotainment Package w/ BOSE

The steering wheel is the SportDesign without multifunction... just the right stalk for control and console controls

thank you!

The Bose part will definitely set you in a certain direction. The factory Bose amplifier gets is audio signal over a proprietary fiber-optic protocol. The only two options you have are going to be purchasing this module from NavTV or replacing the factory amplifier with an appropriate aftermarket. The latter is my personal recommendation but also requires more skill and experience to execute properly(not sure if you're going for DIY or local shop).

As for the aesthetics, SunCoast carries this good looking replacement dash bezel that works well. Looks like they also have this package that gives you a discount for buying both pieces together. Stalk controls are limited to track up/down only with that kit. If you replace the amplifier you lose that function. If you serious about this, I would highly recommend the new Sony XAV units(210 or 5000) or the Alpine iLX-107 with wireless CarPlay. Here's an old photo of a Pioneer unit we installed in a 2013 Boxster a few years back:

That's really nice.

Can you please go into detail regarding replacing the Bose amp with an aftermarket?

Thanks!
