Default 991.2 VTG in a 997.2 Turbo S?

Has anyone ever done this? Does it work?

The question is why. If you want bigger VTG turbos that are compatible with a .2, they are out there.

For the power I guess. And I like to use OEM and not a modified turbo. I don't quite trust the aftermarket VTG upgrades.

OEM are Borg Warner units, they are not exactly great turbos. Any Tial or Garret turbo is better by a landslide dude.

I am not an "OEM is always right" kind of guy. Remember, Porsche is the same company that brought you thermal reactors and rubber centered clutches. They ARE fallible, and they have done some stupid **** in the past.

I just replaced a dead VTG turbo on my 07 TT. 43K miles, VTG actuator dead, VTG arm on the turbo seized. Junk, dude.

Tials are going on there now.

Porsche picks parts and tunes them for street driving with good level of tolerance. Their parts are NEVER picked for max power or torque but overall drivability and reliability. Borg Warner is a great company and makes better products with lot more R&D than small companies like Garret.

Not much difference between your current turbos and 991.2 turbo s VTGS. When they need a refurb you'd be better off sending them to Tial or Proto and asking them to stick 63.5mm compressor wheel on which will give you bit more power (for reference the 991.2 turbo s has 58mm VTG made out of exotic titanium alloy). Not much more power for hybrids though so really not worth doing until refurb time. The 997.2t came with bigger VTGS straight from the factory.

Ok thanks guys.

I'm no stranger to upgraded turbos. I'm trying to not go down that route for this car. When the time comes I just prefer OEM. I'm not sure what the exact differences are in between the 997.2 vs 991.2 VTG. Maybe I need to look for the part number or service manual to see.

In that case you're best off waiting till the new GT2 RS is released. It has its own even more trick VTGS than what the new turbo S has.

The vanilla 991.2 turbo and turbo S have different VTGs. The S gets titanium alloy 58mm compressor wheel. The turbo S also has clever ways to hold on to boost even when you're on the brakes etc

Can't imagine either route being much more powerful than 997.2t VTGS with a tune.

Good thinking. I will see if those turbos will be available. Maybe even order their intercooler spray system as well. That'd be pretty sick.
