Hi all.

I'm kinda new around here but been reading up enough to have a checklist of things to ask for when contemplating purchase of a used P-car.

This one has a 6MT and many say a DME report is especially important. So I asked if I could have a copy and was told the car has had a couple of type 6 over revs 3-4 years ago and that they can't provide me with a copy of the report since it was for internal use only.

Has anybody else gotten a similar response?
My first reaction is to walk away because of the type 6 overrevs and not getting the full story. Am I overreacting?

1. Any dealer that spews that crap cannot be trusted, and is reason enough to walk away from the deal IMO

2. While the DME reports and over revs are WAY over analyzed and overblown, type 6 is the highest range and the most likely to cause damage. Coupled with the dealer's attitude about a copy of the DME report, maybe it's time to move along to another example

I actually had to educate the tech at my dealer on how to even read a DME report. He was telling me that the 1 through 6 ranges were the gears the overrev occurred. They said my car must have been trashed with gears 1 through 3 (my car is tuned to 7k rpm)...

It knows. Doing a scan/dump of the car's controllers is part of a CPO process and is common with cars taken in as trade ins.

Lease return cars may have this done too.

Techs tell me this can run pages. A problem is with the newer cars and the newer diagnostic computer system it is not as straightforward to print this out and techs may not know how to do this. (It may come down to displaying the DME overrev counter values on the computer screen and doing a "print screen" or even taking a pic with a smart phone camera.)

Usually the scanned data goes directly to Porsche.

When I bought my car CPO, they were unable to produce it, given that it was CPO, I knew it would be acceptable. (And it was.)

I'm really not sure why they couldn't produce it, but I don't think the factory software gives them a nice summary like durametric does.

If I was buying a non-cpo 997 now, and this was a serious concern to me, I'd just pick up a copy of durametric or something else that'll dump it. They'll allow unlimited health checks on the enthusiast version, and if you're serious about getting a 997, you'll eventually want it anyway.

As mentioned, just ask for a screenshot pic from smartphone or no deal. Rev range 6 would likely scare me away to begin with. It will likely scare the person you try to sell it to in the future.

Are you guys shy about posting in the 997 forum or is it because the last portion of my post becomes a blur as you hit turbo boost

Kidding aside, PPI was in the plans as was a 7 hour trip to try it in person but I gave up on the car since I was told they couldn't CPO because of the turbo wing and then they could if I went back to original tail and then it wasn't very clear any more when they finally told me the car had seen some abuse in the past and that it had a few range 6 overrevs.

Your input is much appreciated and some still relevant even if I've moved on to looking at other vehicles.

I'm a bit thick, so what is this Over Rev thing all about in a nutshell?

In the past I have hit the limiter a few times, but my car hasn't exploded?

Is it going to if I keep doing it? Once you're on full boost I don't look at the rev counter. Too busy trying to stay on the road hahaha.
