997 vs 991 design
Sold the 997.1 TT few years back while we built our house and now that it's done, I am starting to look around to see what gets my heart pounding again.
Besides considering a 328 GTS (yeah I know ), I am also considering 997.2 TT-S. The problem is, having seen the 991, the 997 design has really started looking dated to me. Somehow the 991 seems/looks more sportier and livelier than the 997?
I am still at least a year out while I save funds for this car, but I am really liking the GTS though.
Would love to hear driving impressions from some one who has owned both.

Threads like this can quickly degenerate into a 997 vs. 991 affair.
I think you have to decide on your priorities for your next purchase. Either car would be wonderful, and there are ups and downs for each choice. I loved my 997 TT, and I love my 991 TTS. Depending on what you want in a 911, you may find the 991 to be a big upgrade over the 997. I did.

Dennis,
I understand that and I am not talking about the performance here or if one is better than the other.
All i meant was, is it just me or do other 997 owners feel the same too i,e finding 991 more attractive than their 997's?

I like the look of the 997.2 TTS much more than the 991.1TTS. The rear fenders and air scoops on the 991.1 just don't look right to me. I'm not crazy about the rear deck lid or spoiler either.

I don't. The interior of a 991 is undoubtedly more updated but I think the designers missed with the 991 exterior styling. It looks fatter and more bloated. Also not a fan of the updated taillights. Just my opinion but I think the 997 will stand the test of time better in the looks department.

Understood. I prefer the 991, and I'm guessing that most people on the 991 boards would feel that way. That being said, there is a large group of 997 owners who prefer the 997. It's a very subjective thing. I think the 991 looks much more modern and current, and the 997 still looks a little bit "old school". Either one is a good choice; you should simply pick what you want.

^ Agree with Dennis. For me right now, I prefer the styling of the 997; but I may change my mind in a few years
This is very much a "do you prefer blondes or brunettes" discussion.

I like the look of the 991 better inside and out they are just out of my price range. If it were equal money or close i would get the 991.
I think it might have to do with owner porsche history. Meaning those that have been with the brand for a long time like the 997 because its interior and somewhat exterior dimensions are similar to 911 of the past. The 991 got a lot bigger and the interior made a big change.
I came from "cockpit" style sports cars like corvettes/vipers so i like the feel of the 991 interior better.

Both are exceptional. In the Turbo's, I prefer the 997 - just looks right (shorter wheelbase, wide hips, scoops). In the non-Turbo trims, particularly the GTS, I prefer the 991 gen. Interior of 991 is better in form and function - just more modern, but I also like the raised middle console and shifter.

Just you
2 types of owners here.
Those who can't (yet) afford the 'latest greatest' and those who dig the 997.
I like the 991 but love the 997 turbo.
In your shoes I would go for the 991, why would you want a car that you feel is dated?
991 GTS is a fantastic car btw ! There is no 'wrong' Porsche.

I have not yet driven a 991, but I do really like the styling of the 991.2 TT as well as GT3. It sounds like the 991 is calling your name but for me, the driving experience would be key, and I'd also have to think about depreciation/resale even though that aspect of shopping is a buzzkill.

I have not driven it yet but intend driving one soon to narrow down my search.

I strongly prefer the look of the 997 Turbo. To me has much more of the classic Turbo lines. The 991 has become too rounded for my tastes. However, I have seen quite a few amazing spec's for the 991. The 997 however, looks good in almost any spec.

Yes, I prefer the look of the 997 Turbo S as well. Since you prefer the 991 though you should definitely get that instead. For me, since I owned an 88 Carrera and a 96 C4S, the 997 Turbo S continues on with that same exquisite old school look in my book.
I also like the look of a 991 Turbo S, but it was so much more expensive when I bought mine 2 years ago, so I got the car I also loved, a 2012. I'd personally be happy with either, as I guess you would be as well.
Truth be told, the 991 Turbo S is pretty hot too. Dang... they're both killer!
