I would walk away, I just bought my 07 997.1TT from a Porsche dealer in San Diego. The salesman I was working with drove the car to the place I ordered the PPI from. A PPI is a must on these car for peace of mind the car you are buying is as the dealer is telling you it is.

I have a feeling that if you push back a little they will give in...

If not, there are probably mobile inspection companies in the area that will do a good job for you.

Won't be much of a PPI with just being able to view the car on a lift.

For maximum benefit the PPI should come *after* a test ride and then a test drive in the car over a distance of some miles so not only does one get to experience the car in its natural state: engine running and the car on the road being used like one intends to use it; but the with the initial cold engine start and idle time and then road time the engine runs about an hour.

The hour's run time to give the DME time to flag any issues with any of the engine's sensors or controls and time for any fluid leaks to show themselves.

Might as well have the selling dealer put the car on a lift and remove some panels and take some pics to show you no water pump, RMS, power steering, radiator or other fluid leaks, the tires are in good condition and the brake rotors don't show any signs of overheating/scoring and the wear lip is not that much.

Get a full DME printout of the total engine run time and over rev counters and time stamps of the last over rev events.

I know 997 Turbos don't grow on trees but I'd urge you to find a suitable car closer to you so you can check out the car.

A local car would be ideal, but this is the car I was looking for color/options wise (almost) and its got 12k miles on it. dealer said that CA law prevents them from taking a deposit so its a "race" bc they wont hold it...

Run far away. CA dealers take deposits all day long. They sound VERY shady.

I might be willing to drive out there, not super close but can at least take a peak at it for you. I have a paint meter as well.

Consider yourself lucky. Everything the dealer told you was inaccurate. Given their lack of honesty, why would you ever want to buy a car from them? Keep looking. Another car will eventually come up for sale.

Which means they have a deposit or they don't and are trying to tip you over the edge.

Regardless if you want the car and can satisfy yourself the car's worth owning keep tabs on the car.

Sometimes these deposits have a way of not turning into a sale and the car may be offered again in a week or two.

California law states all deposits on cars are "refundable" should you change your mind, for any reason. But it does not preclude a dealer from taking one.

Given what you are being told, they are classic fast and loose sales folks. I would simply let them know what you will pay and part of your purchase process is the car needs to go to one of the LA Porsche dealers for PPI - if they won't agree, I would start looking for another car and just maybe they will be calling you soon!

Good luck finding what you are looking for.

Dealer sounded slimy. However, ppi are a waste of time IMO.
Better off flying out and eyeballing it yourself. That and a dme scan will tell you what you want to know. I've paid for 3 ppi, all were totally useless, all well respected Indy......
