OEM Wheel Conundrum: opinions sought
When I purchased my car a few years ago, I noticed the clear coat on the OEM wheels were peeling. The wheels that came on the car from the factory are machined outers with Carrara white inners as seen below:
After I owned the car for a while, I decided that I wanted to convert to center locks (no commentary needed from the peanut gallery on the wisdom of that lol) and went to this:
I still really like the conversion and never see myself going back from it, but I did keep the parts. The wheel conundrum I am facing is what to do with the old wheels. The old wheels are:
a) In the way
b) In need of refinishing
c) Have already been refinished once before (poorly)
So, I need to decide what to do with them as they have been in a friend's garage for over a year. They have good michelins on them too. Here are my options:
a) Keep them and refinish them back to white (original to the car) and find a place to get them out of the way for long term storage.
b) Refinish them back to OEM gunmetal/machined and sell them
c) Sell them as-is with good tires and let the new owner decide what to do with them
d) refinish them in neon and see if anyone has bad taste enough to buy them (sarcasm font)
I'd keep them as potential track wheels, but since I'm now on center locks, AND I don't track the car, that seems silly too.
Any thoughts from the team?

That's easy : C !
I once owned a pristine, really perfect 964 , a garage queen avant la lettre.
I bought it without original wheels and sold it with the same non original wheels.
At the time plenty of OEM 964 wheels were on the market, same for our wheels now. If you ever decided to sell the car you can always source a set if needed.
But in your case that's highly unlikely anyway with the center locks.

Don't try refinish them. I've had two different companies try to refinish a wheel and both completely missed the OEM look (hence the reason I now have a set in blue!).
Having CL wheels is a bonus, so no harm in selling.

Thanks Gang, I think that's what I'll do. I'm checking the date code on the tires to see if they're sellable or junk.

Im contemplating the same thing. I have a mint set of 997.1 turbo wheels with about 4000 miles on them, replaced by a set of OEM 997.1 GT2 wheels. The turbo wheels are just sitting in my garage, it'd be nice to declutter.

of course many folks will want to put them on a 996tt and our tires wont fit that car well. So disregard my ramblings

check the date code on the tires before you decide to sell. Mine are still good and I think makes it easier to sell. If yours are old, you may want to just hang on to a perfect set.

Instead of refinishing them with the two tone scheme, I would just powdercoat them black or gunmetal then sell them that way. Reasons being, I'd imagine the 2 tone refinishing will cost more than powdercoating and the market for black or gunmetal stockers will always be there.

OP - Sounds like you've pretty much made your decision but I wanted to say how much I like your white car with the tint and wheel set up. Very nice! I love white exterior on a 911 - but I ended up with black on black. Oh well, maybe next car!

Thanks! White is always my first choice, just not so easy to find!
