Tiptronic leather boot
I hated the dated looking silver shift gate. The only option was an expensive carbon version.
I noticed on newer cars the automatics have a leather boot. So I bought one off of EBay.
Pulled out the old parts and dropped the boot in. I think it looks great. The only issue might be the valet trying to figure out what to do.
I'm sure some will hate the idea, but I like the look and thought I would share.

Looks good. Now you need to get a leather outer trim piece/shift console bezel to finish the look!

I just used a flat head and pried it free. They came off pretty easy. The only trick is how the boot is held in place.
The top cover has about 5 small tabs that go in the silver trim. Line up your boot to your liking and cut a slit with a razor blade.
Time... Less than an hour. On a scale of 1-10...a 3

I did this mod. Thanks for the idea and pics. I altered your plan a little in that I was able to keep some separation between the silver shift panel and the leather trim piece, so I slid the leather shift boot in between the two and got it all back down and tight. The downside is that my shift boot looks a little more "gathered" rather than taught like yours does and there is less room for the shift lever to move, but the upside is that I was able to keep the silver panel there and intact, so the mod is completely reversible without me needing to buy new parts. Also, It creates the illusion that the shifter stalk is a lot shorter which I kind of like, even though that was an unintended consequence.
Hardest part of the install was getting the shift **** "head" back on and tight again. I was afraid I broke it for a minute there, but it just required a little force to push it down far enough to lock in place.

I played with the boot in different positions to see what allowed the best play when moving the shifter .
The other reason might be that you left the other parts in place and that pulls the leather tighter.
As for the shifter ****... I totally agree. I hate that wimpy spring, and mine likes to pop off the button when I remove it.
I'm glad you gave it a shot. But as they say, no pics means it didn't happen.

Here's the finished product:
As you can see, it's a little less taught than yours, which does reduce the maneuverability of the shifter a little bit, but it goes in the gear and still looks better than the J-gate of the standard shifter, and if I want to revert it back to stock, I can do that in about 2 minutes. I like it though. Too bad I couldn't find cocoa brown to match my interior, but the black is ok.
