How sparkly is your oil filter?

How sparkly is your oil filter?
just did oil today at 31.5K miles. My last change was in October at 23K miles. All together, i think there were ~40 bits as the ones on the pictures.
How does your filter look like?

I've not analyzed mine, so I couldn't tell you how normal that is. BUT, I'd send an oil sample to blackstone.

Change your oil every 5,000 miles. Not 8.
Don't use Mobil 0W40. Use. Mobil 5W50. (I don't know what you used)
Get a magnetic drain plug from L&N Engineering.
Yes, you can do Blackstone UOAs, but one test won't tell you much, yet.
That actually does not seem that bad or abnormal. I've seen worse.

The last time I cut mine open (last oil change) I had some tiny flakes similar to what is pictured.. I have done 3 Blackstone UOAs over the past 12K miles and my metal wear is in the normal range.. YMMV.

casica, can you bottle up a oil sample from your used oil? It won't be perfect, but it will give you a baseline. I have monitored the "metal bits" since the 996TT.. 0 to 7 bits of metal is "very good" 8 to 15 is "normal" Over 35 requires a "oil" weight change.. 0W40 to 5W40 or 5W50 OR a blend of the M1 0W40/5W50 (depending on the ambient temps)..
You will find that most oil sheer into the 30W range above 5K miles with this engine. The high heat and multiple gear driven pumps break down the oil.

Well, brought car, filter, and oil to dealer to take a look. The advisor brought the goods to the master tech and he said it's normal. I was advised to bring the car in for the next oil change so that they can inspect again.

Mobil1 doesn't seem to offer 5w40: https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/mobil-1/mobil-1. Do folks here use Liqui-Moly? RedLine?

Ah. I have 12 pack of M1 5w50 coming in this Friday. I'll try that for a few months see how it goes. I'm also going to send oil to blackstone to see how it looks. If it has anything elevated I'll call PCNA. If not, i guess it is nothing to worry about...

(To be honest I'd switch to 0w-40 oil at an even milder temperature point.)
A 5w-40 or a 5w-50 oil can't handle the low temperatures and oil flow at start up and as the engine warms up may be insufficient to properly lubricate the engine.
BTW, I run 5w-50 in my 2003 Turbo (and 2002 Boxster) here in northern CA and I change the oil every 5K miles. I have not bothered with an analysis but at around 5K miles there is a bit more valve clatter at cold start and the Boxster is more likely to smoke upon cold start. The Turbo too, actually but while the Turbo might do this once as the 5K mile point gets close the Boxster can do it more than once.
Oil pressure -- courtesy of the Turbo's oil pressure gage -- shows no real change in hot idle or hot high RPM oil pressure under the same ambient air temperature conditions between fresh oil vs. oil that has 5K miles on it.
Based on my admittedly unscientific method I believe for my area and my usage 5K miles is about as many miles as I would want to run 5w-50 oil or for that matter 0w-40 oil, too.

Be aware that if you live/drive where temps get down to -25C you should run 0w-40.

Also M1 5W50 is on the Porsche approved list for the 997.2TT unless I hit 0F/-18C on cold start which isn't a problem for me at all
