Sport Chrono over boost function
#16
I don't think that this is true. It is the torque that increases as noted below in the mid-range. Max power is delivered at peak rpm when power = torque x revs effectively, but by the redline the torque is falling so max power remains 500 bhp (.2 car) or 480bhp (.1 car).
The .2 car overboost is from 650Nm to 700Nm. (480 to 520 ft.lb.)
Porsche say: Overboost involves briefly increasing the boost pressure (max. 10 seconds) for enhanced acceleration at full load (accel- erator pedal fully pressed). This function is activated on pressing the Sport button on the center console. The increase in boost pressure is attained with the aid
of the boost pressure control system and raises the maximum boost pressure by approx. 0.2 bar (2.9 psi) (+20 %).
As a result, the maximum torque rises from 620 Nm (460 lb.-ft.) to 680 Nm (505 lb.-ft.) between 2,100 rpm and 4,000 rpm, enabling markedly improved acceleration and elasticity especially in the middle rev range.
The higher boost pressure gives rise to a sudden substantial increase in the mechanical stress on the components and, above all, in heat-induced stress. This results above all from the continu- ally rising charge air and combustion chamber temperatures.
With regard to these processes and the maximum possible stress on the compo- nents, the Overboost function is limited to 10 seconds. After this period, the original full-load pressure without Over- boost is set. As soon as the stress on the engine is relieved briefly as a result of closure of the throttle valve (e.g. after gear-shifting), the Overboost function can be activated again.
Overboost mode is indicated by an arrow symbol in the digital boost pres- sure gauge on the instrument dials. The arrow next to the boost pressure gauge indicates the brief Overboost, which is only possible when the Sport function is active (the word “SPORT” is to be seen on the display).
The Sport Chrono Package Turbo is complemented by more agile all-wheel- drive tuning and, in conjunction with optional Tiptronic S, by a modified start- ing program. When the “SPORT” button is pressed, drive-off is effected in 1st gear, instead of 2nd gear.

In real terms though (unless you're doing a 6th gear pull from 1,500 rpm or less),.. the boost doesn't really come on until 3,500,... and it goes back to normal by 4,100.
So the effect of the over-boost in the lower 4 gears looks like the little lump inside this red box.
That's why I've always felt is was more of an advertising gimmick.

Success!
I found the elusive overboost arrow this morning. It appeared at full throttle in 2nd gear, in sport mode, on a long freeway entrance ramp.

Just picked up a 997.1 with the Sports Chrono cant seem to get the "Chrono" to appear on the MFD menu.
I will be looking for this arrow now.
In post 14 how do you get the boost gauge to show in the MFD as the current boost pressure? I just see a graph from 0 to 14PSI.
Still figuring things out TIA. Will have to resort to the manual.

^ That's odd. Do you have the factory build sheet? Does it show SC as an option?
I suppose it's possible the PO added SC after the fact and there is a coding issue.. I assume you have the dash wart and sport button?
Another thing could be the instrument cluster.. I've learned that if the cluster gets swapped out and not coded correctly, you could "lose" or "gain" options on the MFD..
As I recall, just cycle thru the various displays on the MFD should reveal a number (psi or bar) for the boost as well as one of a boost graph.
Yes, the manual is your friend.
Did you do a PPI on this car before you bought?

i -think- .2's have lower boost levels. 1 vs 1.2 bar (or something like that).

Saabin: yes on the PPI,wart, sports button and was a factory option.

I can activate the Chrono with the Durametric, maybe the next trip to the dealer (perhaps never) I can have them look at it.

Looks like it has been "removed" via PIWIS or Durametric. Just add it back in and see if it shows up.

nzskater you are correct it was somehow removed or deleted. Message below from Durametric support. Just sat in a friends 997.1 TT and his is enabled.
Further, we don't know the exact steps to enable the chronometer. The coding option of the Pro kits includes options for enabling the Chronometer under the Gateway control module and the Instrument Cluster, but what - if any - other prerequisites or steps necessary to enabling this option are unknown to us.
