the 997 is a little more pleasing to the eye inside and out.
Both a relible and fast.

Go for the 997.

Default Sorry...it was too harsh...

Just being honest, but I apologize for sounding unkind. Arrogant, I'm not, but my words were a bit harsh.

I loved my 996 C4S. I thought the rear end of that car was very attractive. There's nothing wrong with owning a 996, especially a turbo. It's just not the right choice for everybody.

OP Let me ask the question a little differently, convince us to buy a 996TTS vs a 997TT. I think if you can convincingly build a list of pros for the 996TTS over the 997TT then you've helped move the process along for yourself.

^ I like that logic - turning the question around the other way can help you see a different perspective. (Personal finance guy Dave Ramsey uses that a lot, FWIW).

Another way to look at justifying a purchase objectively, vs. subjective rationalization, is "what is the 996 holding you back from doing, or costing you, that the 997 would not, all other things being equal?".

I've owned each, 996, 997.1 and 997.2. Absolutely go for the 997!

OK here are the reasons to buy a 996 TTS

1. They are probably done depreciating, in fact it looks like cars that sold for $51k in 2013 are being listed at 60+ now (I know listed != sold).

2. They the Turbo S is rare, hard to say for sure but I think there are only 180 996 Turbo S coupes in the US? 600 ever made?

3. a 996 costs $5-10k less. I think I could get a really nice coupe somewhere under $58 and probably a nice cab under $53. The cheapest 997 turbos are all $72k.

4. One of the main improvements in the 997 is the navigation computer. Regardless of which I buy this is getting yanked out on day 1 so that is less of an issue to me.

5. The track near my house is only about a 100 mph track so the additional 30 HP is not so much of an advantage on a 997. In fact I was already slightly over my head driving the 996 turbo.

In my mind the advantages of the 997 are.

1. Looks better outside.

2. Newer

3. Better traction control

4. It has a button that makes it go faster.

That seems like a solid list and sounds like you're leaning towards the 996TTS. You should follow your instincts and budget and go for it.

I had a 2002 C4 Cab - after some slight mods (suspension, intake and exhaust) I loved it. The only thing I didn't love was the other Porsche owners looking down at it because of aesthetics. Great car - it was a Porsche.

Go with a 996tt not turbo s and save yourself some money. The turbo s in the 996 variant isn't all that its chalked up to be. I've read that many folks claim the standard 996tt is faster on the street. I know there is noticeable lag with the larger turbos on the S. You can get a good low mileage example for probably 45k if you shop hard and be patient. You'll never lose a dollar.

05 turbo s is a really nice setup. When I picked up my brand new 07 tt in 07 they had a 05 tts blk on blk only 800mi, I very nearly bought it instead of my tt.

with the X50 package Will be just about as fast as the 997 turbo. I almost went that route. If I am in the market for a porsche to track, it would be a 996tt. I think the 996 *** is just as sexy if not more sexy than the 997. Just the front kinda kills it. I do like the spartan interior of the 996 for a fun car and the doors are much sexier on the inside. But not for a DD if you want the whole package of a newer car, more updates, less dated look. Also sitting in both you will notice an obvious size difference due to the layout. The 996 feels much smaller

Styling, variable turbos and PASM would factor in to my decision around which to buy. If you like the look of the 996, like the personality of the turbos and the feel of the suspension, then go for the 996.

I agree with you on the back end and front end look! I shopped for both before I landed on a guards red 996tt for a steal. I'm going to drive this for two years before upgrading to a 991. I pay cash for my toy cars and the current cost of the 991 is too much for me to bite off on. I'm hoping those will be in the low 100s a couple years forward.

Just bought a 996tt with x50 for $45k with 3700 miles (not a mistake), $9k of work done by dealer as it had been sitting for some time (included in the price). I figure I got a $100k discount on an essentially new car. My friend just bought a 997tt for $60k. They look very similar (except for the front), use the same engine, and would appear to be pretty similar in performance. For the money, I'm pleased with my purchase and don't really think the differences justify the price differential. I'm just sayin...
