You can be running a lean map> will turn the tips white (not counting race gas). With 91 octane we want to run a little more rich vs a 93 octane map.
You also can be running good one day, and have a fuel pump issue (run lean) High knock retard with heavy fueling=soot
Put another way, if you watch your tips, you will quickly know when something isn't correct.

I'm running a 93 octane tune and usually running a 96 or greater octane fuel. ECU adapting and running a richer mixture to support on track environments. While I do agree excess soot etc would be alarming unless you're driving a Cummings diesel but our cars throw soot in stock form especially during city driving.
