Blown Turbo
Appear to have blown the driver's side turbo on my '09 997tt. It has 64k miles, APR tune, and a Klein decat exhaust. Was at WOT in 2nd gear, about 5k RPMs when I lost power and smoke started billowing out the back. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? Is there someplace that does a good job rebuilding VTGs?

I have replacement turbos in stock and ready to ship. You can either upgrade your turbos or you can go with an oem replacement. let me know if there is anything that i can do for you.

Slakker, Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Have you or your mechanic done a thorough inspection of your intake and exhaust systems? I had a turbo fail on my 08 and the oil and compression damage necessitated replacing turbos, IC's, exhaust, headers, etc. plus rebuilding the motor which suffered two bent rods and failed bearings. Total cost >$50K (although that included some upgrades "as long as we were in there). Hope your story has a happier ending and that the damage is limited to a single turbo. Good luck.

Slakker...i remember the story when you were buying the car. Before you just swap the turbo you should decide if you want to "build" the motor and do other mods or substantial stuff or just swap that single turbo? Is there a good Porsche shop near you in OK?
Ie) Diagnostics on this turbo should tell you if you blew out the seal and failed the turbo or if you over-boosted and it oversped? Sometimes you may have secondary failures. I don't think that you have cats, but blowing oil through the cats causes poisoning and failure...
PM Kevin here on RL as he is recognized as a "turbo expert"

Thanks Igooz. Good memory on the cats. Not going any further with the mods. May even back off some of the mods I have. I've got a really good pcar mechanic and hope to know more next week.

Why? I chose to have an Evoms 775 kit installed and have the motor rebuilt by John Brey with Carrillo rods, strengthened head bolts, gaskets, etc. Also replaced the clutch with a Sachs 3.0 setup, welded the coolant pipes, installed a billet short shift kit with linkage, had the suspension upgraded and a Fabspeed exhaust installed. Same type of decision many enthusiasts make and some just throw the parts being replaced into a corner of their garage rather than hassle with Ebay used part resales. Now, four years, 18,000 miles and many happy track days later, I have a 775 hp 997 turbo that is rather unique, street legal and serves as a daily driver when not being flogged at the track.
