2009 997 TT vs 2014 991 Carrera S
Hi All
I'm in the market for another vehicle it's going to be a daily driver.
Not new to high performance cars and looong time Porsche owners " wife included"
Drove a 2009 Twin Turbo Tiptronic car the other day that has me very interested however made the mistake of driving a loaded 991 Carrera S right after and it's very impressive.
The 991 platform feels like it is a generation step forward which it is. Steering and handling is very precise. PDK with Sport Plus is a masterpiece .
But yet the Turbo keeps me interested I can't justify the new Turbo S for my daily driver. So here is the question which one is more comfortable and better to live with and give you the rush when needed.
Not planning on any track days for this vehicle.

Here's why I prefer the non turbo... exhaust note. Sure you can throw an aftermarket exhaust on the turbo, but stock for stock, the sounds from a Carerra S are better than a Turbo

Might be blasphemy in the Turbo section but it would be a difficult decision. I love every bit of my .1 TT. But the 991 S is an amazing piece of kit and plenty fast when the need arises. As a DD, especially if the Turbo is a tip I would prob lean towards the 991.

^I am 100% in the opposite camp...I would take a 997TT in any form: MT/TIP/PDK over any 991S. The looks, the width, the "turbo", the power, the torque, the Mezger, the lack of over-refinement, ... , the respect!
I did use my 997TT for 6+ yrs for DD and it was just awesome...and she is still awesome sitting there and looking pretty!

Thanks Guys.
As far as the rear width they seem very similar the 991 looks equally as good.
The Carrera S is actually a harsher ride then the Turbo which suprised me. As did the exhaust note the Turbo is quiet while the Carrera snarls.
Last question I felt the Turbo moving around on the Highway a bit while the 991 tracked better. While I have a Cayenne with 4 wheels drive is that possibly a byproduct of the 4 wheels drive on the Turbo?

If the turbo was "moving around" on the road something is wrong. That is more likely bad tires or an alignment issue.
As far as taking the 991 over the TT. I guess it's what you like, I personally like the outside of the 991 but hate the interior. To me it's like a Lexus and not a Sports car.
The Turbo kicks the crap out of the Carrera. But the Carrera probably out handles the TT because of the wider track and more electronic aids..
I would imagine a first time Porsche owner may choose the 991 over the turbo.. But we like real sports cars..
Ones you have to shift and cars that require a bit of driving skill.
The 991 requires neither skill...
Totally a personal choice. You cant go wrong with either. The 991 will never match the TT for torque or the grin on your face in full boost.. But the 991 may be more civil for a DD. It's more like a Lexus with a Porcshe badge... I guess that is the market Porsche wants to attract..

The 991 is as you described it a technological master piece and yes the skills required to drive it are not that high.
I drove a 2012 Turbo S and would have bought that car but it sold before I could decide. Just wasn't crazy about the Retro Fuchs wheels on it.
Thanks for the info on the Turbo not suppose to be moving around on the highway. A friend informed me they do this sometimes if Tires are intermixed it happens.
Jerry yes it was surprising soft compared to the 991.
I'm going to drive the Turbo tomorrow if it feels right it will be my daily ride.

Totally different beasts. TT vs NA. RWD vs AWD. TT power, you're looking at about a 200lb-ft torque difference over the S. test drive both and you'll know immediately which you want

If I may, just one more point to consider. Depending on how much need you have for Nav and Bluetooth, 991 might be more useful for you as a DD. However, you can always work you way around the old electronics on the 997.1 without much effort, but it is very difficult, not to say impossible, to get the same boost you get from a TT in a 991 S.

TT all the way. Especially if you are at all worried about depreciation.
And as far as upgraded electronics - yes, the 991 is better, but these are noisy cars in general. The only way you can have a decent phone conversation in a 911 is with an ear piece.

I have to agree with my ORANJE TT above- The depreciation alone would be my deciding factor. The Tip can be had for around mkt avg where a manual will be $$ sought after-
With that bit of conservative advice - I'd then say- if you can go 2010 get the PDK. I think you'd still be under a 2014 CS. This is my off the cuff formula I made a few yrs back & it seems to hold up well:
2014: Cost to drive- Take MSRP.. now look at Invoice base- I add zero to options (which carry 15% profit from cost to MSRP). Then I back up $7-8k per model yr. On a nice '14 with some options your looking at $22k to bust the 1st bug.
PPL try to say I'm screwing ppl etc.. all I have to say is what would you pay for a '14 with x miles when you can have a new one? There is the answer.
2009/2010- you'll be looking at a lower than avg depreciation since it's already taken most of it's beating although w/ a TIP I must say it will probably sell lower than some 07-08 with manual. PDK to me just seemed to be the way to go if you don't get a 3rd pedal.
To get the same depreciation & skip the new drive off cost- plus HALO car. TURBOOO.. but this is the turbo section
GL! I really like the new interiors in the Cayenne & the new 911 are nice.

The only alternative to the TT would be a TTS.
The 991 is a great car, can't match the performance of the TT and handling of all wheel drive.
You can't really miss with either. The TT is more of a raw sports car.
