Default Oil change '07 tt, anyone done it by himself or watched it being done?

Really think 20K is too long for the 1st oil change. Need the 20K-dealer-oil-change for warranty purposes, but want to change the oil at 10K miles. Dealer price of just oil change $350. However, the filter is $18, 10 qts oil @ $8ea which means a saving of $250. Not bad for less than an hours work.

Plus some hands-on guys like to do the change themselves to make sure everything is done carefully and correctly. Anyone out there already try the oil change? Looks like the filter is easy enough to locate and remove. What size oil wrench is required?? And too, what about the drain plug? Is there a cover plate covering it and what is the bolt size?? Thanks for the info.

Wow, $350 seems like a rip. Did you try looking for an independent (Porsche specialist) shop? Anyone with experience changing the oil?

sounds hi too-i would think that they would charge labor rate per hour-$250 would be at least 2 and 1/2 hours labor for oil change. if it takes that long, let them do it. if not, try another dealer. i have found that the price for simple jobs (mount, balance and install winter tires) can vary by hundreds of dollars between dealers. try a few dealers

I would like to change the oil myself. That must sound strange, No one has responded that has changed their own oil. I know that cannot be with these outstanding machines.

TJ, i seem to remember oil changes to be in the $300 canadian neighborhood. check with an independent porsche mechanic to verify the book rate for 911 oil changes. it takes time to drain 10 liters of oil and then they have to warm up the 911 to check the oil level.

well you will need a 15mm for the case drain and a 19 mm for the tank drain,
bot are easy enough to find, if you want to drain the turbos they are an 8mm allen

Thanks for feedback. Looks a bid more complicated than I thought. Understand the case drain, but what is the tank drain?? And the two turbos are drained. I guess this makes the 8.5 qts they suggest in the owners manual. The other question....are these plugs located under a splash pan under the car???

the case drain is loacated on the drivers side of the case at the bottom where the 2 halve join, the tank drain is on the pass side abut 12 inchs towards the passenger side and 9 inchs towrad the front of the car (thats a guess I Dont have one here to mesasure)
the case will drain about 2 qts. the tank 7 and if you drain the turbos you will get about .1 qts from each

Thanks for essential info. I guess Porsche has divided the oil pan into two separate sections. Interesting. And too, the turbos you say contain only 0.1 quarts...do techs at the dealers normally drain these with such little amounts?? The filter change seems simple enough, looks lke the little black painted guard present there prevents a mess when pulling out the filter.

Had a feeling about need for "new" washers... for both the case and tank. Is that correct or have you in the past used the same washers?? I know with my previous M3s/honda, they always furnished new oil-pan washers with purchased filters.

This business of seal rings...when I called my 100 mile away Porsche dealer for what was needed to change the oil, they did not mention the seal rings. I guess I won't drain the turbos at 10K miles, but I will be sure the dealer-tech empties them with new seal rings for the mandatory 20K oil change. Lots of black art to these little tech-chores...what I hate most is doing some mechanical work, then needing something not anticipated and no way of getting the part because shops are closed on Sunday, etc. Thanks again for the info.
Incidentally, are the drain-plugs visible from underneath the tt or is there some kind of plate or spash-pan that needs removing??

Thanks for the reply. I've had nothing but M3s up to now which have underneath splash covers. I'll have my tt in the air to change the oil next week and with your info should have no problems.

Thanks much for the references. The first with details was great. The 3rd most likely had some other good stuff, but I could not find anything on oil changes. Appreciate the info, had a feeling that is was more complicated than the usually M3s I have been accustomed to.
