Default Running In

Picked up new 997tt today! Absolutely delighted with the car.
Garage salesman said that the German factory have told them that the car needs no run in but he(the salesman) has always allowed 1000miles below 4000rpm before pushing it, what does everyone think about that?

But all salesmen at my dealership, said don't worry about the breaking in. They agreed with your German Factory rep. I had to drive 400 miles back home.,,,didn't push it, but went over the 4300 rpm (mentioned in factory book as break in rpm limit for 3K miles) a couple times. I still think steady speed on a new engine...not so good....so I did go up to 80-100 ever so often.

Congrats on the new TT.

The big question on break in! My .02's:
I agree with the no-steady speed break in.
Keep the rpm's under the book but run them up and down with in it.
No triple digit speeds until 1000 miles +/-.
Lot's seem to hit-it here and there to seat the rings... "I have done the same in the past and will do it again"

I too want to hear others .02's.

In the lower gears run it up and let it drop back to seat the rings.

Don't quite drive it like you just stole it, maybe like you stole it yesterday

I agree with you except that you can hit triple digits in 6th while still under 4000 rpm, so speed has nothing to do with it. This was my third new P car and all got treated the same, drive it without looking at the rpms you will be fine, just don't track it the same day ( although you probably could). I have 70k miles on the boxster, 40k miles on the cayenne and almost 10k miles on the TT and they are all running strong.
my 0.2 cents.

You are right about 6th under 4000. Brain fart on me.

Cheers

Must the oil be dropped after the run-in or is the magnetic oil plug sufficient to mop up the filings?

My dealer and service said wait until 20k.

I think the book states 20k???

I will drop mine after 500-600 regardless.

I to want the pro's to chime in.

Not that I am aware of.
Oil stays in there till 20k or two years. That is pretty amazing, but I presume they have bench run most of the metal of the egdes?

I changed the factory fill on mine at around 6000 miles (filter, too) and saw absolutely nothing in there that would have suggested that was not early enough. You should be able to take it to 1 year without a problem. My neighbor was a former Porsche mechanic and said that all these break in suggestions are way too conservative. Just warm it up gradually and then vary the RPMs a lot for the first few thousand miles.
