Question DSG

How does the DSG differ from BMW's SMG and from a Ferrari F1 and Lamborghini E-gear? Magwheel

DSG (double clutch):
http://www.audi.com/audi/com/en1/new...d_details.html

CambioCorsa (Maserati/Ferrari....single clutch):
Cambiocorsa transmission with electro-hydraulic operation and electronic management operated by paddles behind the steering wheel, triple cone synchronisers 1st and 2nd, and double cone on 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th.
Asymmetrical limited-slip differential (25% under acceleration, 45% on lift-off), hypoid bevel gear pair, final drive 3.73 (11/41).
Dry twin-plate clutch, diameter 215 mm (8.46 in) with flexible couplings and hydraulic control.

I've driven both and FWIW, I prefer the CambioCorsa.

SMG:

BTW, the delay in DSG/PDK has been with long term reliability at the elevated HP/Torque levels of the TT......in other words, they've been blowing up.

In other words, those who love to mod/tinker, this might not be the best choice, at least initially.

What does your dealer say about the TT cab release date?

If I understand (and remember) correctly, the DSG spins the adjacent gears and the SMG II doesn't. However, the SMG II blips the throttle to match the RPM for the downshifts. From my experience on a VW, the DSG is ridiculously smooth; smoother than the SMG II.

I agree with ///Mous3. I've driven SMG and DSG and the former is crap and the latter is great. The SMG is jerky, harsh, and doesn't rev-match as well as my feet do. The DSG is quick, smooth and matches revs up or down. The way I see it if the high-tech stuff isn't as good as my feet I'm not paying for it.

Porsche have always been very quick to point out that they were the ones that in fact pioneered the technology now known as DSG. It was dubbed PDK ("Porsche Double Klutch") and used on the old 956/962 and Pikes Peak racecars. Bit of a pisser that other companies have beat Porsche to actually making the technology commercially viable, but then again the VW Group has much deeper pockets to invest in something like that. The next generation Mitsubishi Evo is also supposed to get its own version of DSG/PDK.

While i've only ever tried Ferrari's F1 and BMW's SMG, every journo review of DSG compared to F1/SMG seems to have DSG coming out roses. We know now not to treat magazine reviews as bible truth, but where there's smoke there's fire...

As has been pointed out, DSG may not be so mod-friendly however...

Now a GT3 with DSG...

Question Be careful what you wish for!

DSG has only 1 "mode"; right? No full-manual as in SMG II, as far as I recall. I think that is the reason that no DSG that I have ever tried allowed the engine to rev to the redline. The shift points are sort of "pre-set", perhaps very conservatively. So, if someone re-tune a DSG car, the peak performance may not be attainable without re-tuning the DSG as well.

Correct me if I am wrong.

DSG has three modes really.
One is normal driving, one for sport driving where it holds the revs higher and fully manual.
I love this gearbox for my daily driver, but it is too sanitised, too good for a sportscar. I would never spec it in a car that I wanted to drive for fun.

As far as the "Audi" DSG is concerned you are wrong. The DSG in an Audi TT will do exactly what you tell it to do with the exception of allowing a 'Type II' over-rev. On the way up you can bounce off the rev-limiter all you want. I wasn't able to determine the upper limit on downshifts but it was high-enough ~5k rpm IIRC. It will pretty-much downshift when you tell it to and if you hint with your throttle foot it will do precisely what you want.

Now, the VW spin might have 'safer' parameters baked into the the electronics. Cannot say.
