Default vgt turbo rebuild

I couldn't find any threads on this, so figured I might as well. I wanted to go larger vgt's but liked the idea of being able to go back to stock if I wanted. So when I found a pair of used 65s with advertised low miles I jumped on them. But, the difficulty of removing the studs plus how nasty they looked left me with some fears as to the overall health, so I decide to rebuild them. I found a few melett rebuild kits, but none with a 3 port 360 thrust bearing that research made me really want. I contacted a turbo rebuild place and worked with them to get a 3 port bearing that fit. I ended up reusing the journal bearing as it looked good (plus zero play even when nasty) and they didn't have one that fit. Pretty happy with how the first one came out, we'll see how they do once installed. First time ever opening up a turbo. One down and one to go.

Before and after

Some looks at the VGT (open and closed) , looks like its welded in unlike the bv50/bv43 for other manufacturers that can be removed.

Any part numbers for the rebuild parts? I did a similar thing as I have no records of my turbos ever being replaced and right around 100k kms I found a good deal on a slightly used set. Shop told me the turbos are badly corroded so when I get them back I'll clean them up and see about doing a rebuild myself..

Thanks

In the end I used a k04 rebuild kit from turbo lab of america, after about 40 pix back and forth with caliper readings of parts! The retainer clamps, bolts, and journal bearing can't be used from k04 kit. Melett does have a rebuild that includes the journal bearing and clamps but mine looked great so I didnt bother. I really wanted the upgraded thrust bearing. They did have a kit with an upgraded journal bearing tho. Maybe should have bought both kits and pieced together the best of both, but I didnt. I could not find the little 12mm studs anywhere so I used some high heat stainless bolts from McMaster car. The trust collar, washer, turbine seal ring, retainer ring, oil deflector, etc all fit from the k04. I did not use the compressor nut as I marked mine to make sure it was still balanced when reassembled. Lots of k04 rebuild videos online and its pretty close to the same.
