DME report contemplation

Hi All,

Looking at a 997TT with ~19k miles on the ODO. The car is tuned with light bolt-ons. I am concerned about the Range 5 and 6 counts. Can anyone please provide further insight?

I did a calculation with the mileage and run hours, and it comes out to around 24 mph, so that seems reasonable... IS this an absolute no go due to the range 6 over rev? Otherwise, the car is in fantastic condition.

The 1 over rev in range 6 may just be a fluke. The range 5 is slightly concerning, but if everything else checks out you should be ok, just negotiate accordingly. Also a leak down test may not be a bad idea on this car. Get a PPI and if everything else checks out, go for it.

Also, highly recommend this video.

I suspect both the level 5 and 6 are bogus. 3 engine revolutions on level 4 is also meaningless. Nearly impossible to get that combination of Rev counts over that rpm range, IMO. Level 3 is nothing terrible, but given they are recent events a leak down wouldn't be a bad idea in the name of being overly cautious.

If the car was tuned, does that typically raise the rpm limits and also the over-rev ranges or do they remain the same as oem ranges?

ECU counts revs in preset/ given ranges with or without a tune.

DME reports and concerns are way overrated and are only used by stealerships to deny service. If you like the car and the PPI is good I wouldn't be worried at all.

Agree with the other comments. 5 and 6 are most likely glitches. Even range 4 would be only 3 revolutions of the crank. Nothing to be concerned about.
Raising the rev limiter has no impact on the rev ranges. They are fixed values in the DME. This is why you often see cars with tunes max out range 1. The raised limiter lets the car go into range 1 before way before it kicks in.

That guy is my hero! also have the same name.

"might break the rennlist server" HAHA

Dont worry about them too much. Like he said if you like the car and it checks out buy it!

Yep, all noise.

Anymore I feel DME's are so overrated and I get that Dealers love to deny claims on this data.

Hell I've heard of guys being able to even wipe, or rewrite their DME statistics on the ECU...

In the end a solid PPI with mechanical health checks, compression, leak down, visuals on other systems is best.

Dont let that 1 @ 5 scare you away.

I agree ....proof is in the actual pudding .... Get a solid PPI

If anybody asks me for a DME report whenever I go to sell my fully built 3.8 Mezger that revs to 8k rpm, doesn't deserve to buy it. :banghead:

I got rid of all my range numbers by switching to a syvecs :biggulp:

This is my DME report before I went to a stand alone...I scanned it just to see. I never got a DME report before I bought the car so some of this could have been from me or the last guy.
Range 1 21580 1764.9
Range 2 5762 1764.9
Range 3 2302 1764.5
Range 4 793 1753.0
Range 5 9 1750.9
Range 6 6 1750.9

That's what my service manager of 20 years says
