Default Turbo queries

Hi all,

I have a receipt for work done on my 997 turbo to replace the temperature probes on the turbos and to drill and tap broken bolts. Can anyone explain why this work was done? What do the temperature probes do and why do they have to be replaced? Will it need to be done again? Once the turbo bolts have been replaced, if stainless steel ones were used, will they last forever or have to be done again? I live in an area where the roads are salted in the winter. I occasionally drive the car through the winter.

Many thanks.

Post the pictures of your turbochargers and linkage. Stainless fasteners gal up over time. The high grade steel Genuine Porsche studs are very good. The heat with corrosion eats the turbine housing threads.
Last winter I replaced 2 each 997TT VT turbine housings due to bad threads (corrosion/heat and cracks in the thermos probe (hole).. So if you need to drive your car in the snow the risk down the road is buying new VNT turbochargers at $3500 plus each..
In extreme cases the VNT linkage seizes internally (the physical arm that passes thru the bearing housing to VNT) requiring a replacement turbocharger.. Corrosion is a expensive repair on this engine.

Thanks Kevin. So what function do the thermo probes perform?

They measure Exhaust Gas Temp.. When the temps reach 970 C the ECU forces a limp mode and over fueling sequence.

Thank you. I’ve been wondering what they did. So I guess they’re quite different from the lamda sensors.

Is replacement of these temperature probes a common requirement? My car has only done 43k miles!

It seems like its not even possible to replace a turbo without destroying at least one bolt in the process. Depending on where your car came from (both of mine are East Coast cars), you will have varying levels of corrosion on those bolts which are brittle to begin with. Not unusual at all.
