Default Pentosin Reservoir Belching Fluid

I cannot figure this out and its driving me crazy... Bought the car last autumn (2007 manual TT).

My clear pentosin reservoir (with green lid, in boot under plastic trim) continues to belch fluid. I bought a new lid, so I know it is tight. It will squirt through the relief hole in lid. Enough leaks that I see drops on the garage floor.

My mechanic checked it out this spring and did not notice a problem with hydraulic system operation. What would cause this?

The clutch slave cylinder needs to be replaced.

Agree, from what I have read this is the classic symptom of the factory hydraulic assist clutch failing. You should be able to search for that issue and see some information about it. You will also see several options for solving it, although the path you take will be based on your personal preferences.

^ Pretty sure this is a classic case of clutch slave and/or accumulator failing.

Would I feel any of this failure in my left foot or clutch engagement point?

Maybe not, one symptom of a bad accumulator is (in addition to other things) a very stiff clutch pedal when the car is off.. Notmally when you shut it off you can push the clutch in a bunch of times befroe pedal effort increases. With a bad accumulator it takes like 1 or 2 times to get stiff.

If it's pumping out of the front, your rear area is probably dropping dangerously low. Have you checked the area in the engine where you put in pentosin? I had this happen to me a few months ago. It was a faulty slave and had to be replaced. Everything's fine now.

The accumulator is separate from the slave. When the accumulator starts to go bad, you can feel it as the clutch pedal is hard to push in on early cold starts. The symptoms he describes of pentosin being pushed out of the front hood cap is directly tied to the clutch slave. The accumulator is much easier to replace than the slave. I believe the transmission has to be lowered slightly to replace the slave.

BTW, make sure any of the fluid is thoroughly cleaned from any metallic surfaces...it is highly corrosive when exposed to air. Also this is a good tip to identify a pressure leak in your hydraulic clutch system: after you shut the engine off the clutch pedal should still be able to be pushed in with hydraulic assist for approx. 30 mins. Whereas if you have a small leak somewhere and shut the car off the clutch will immediately be difficult to push in the next time you start the car.

Into the shop next week. I am told this can be an engine out event. Will post results.

Clean up - soak affected area with Simple Green, rinse, repeat? Area is SUPER tight.

If its the clutch slave cylinder, it's doable with the engine in the car.. no need to take it out.

I've never heard of anyone just doing the slave. Most do slave + accumulator. The parts cost is nominal.

Personally, i've done it 3 times on two different mezgers, i.e. slave & accum. and its NOT engine out

You replace the three together. Do it right the first time. Or pay me more later.
