Turbo Upgrade Thoughts
Hello Gents, I am having some performance upgrades scheduled (to begin Oct. 15th when my new HRE wheels arrive) to my 997.1 (H&R Springs, Kline Headers, EP Stage 2 exhaust, By Design Intercoolers, Cobb Accessport, and a tune...installation will be done by Autoquest Motorsports), but I am now leaning towards going the next step and doing a Turbo upgrade too. To which my question is what are your thoughts on going to Garrett GT28 or GT30 ball bearing water/oil cooled turbos? Right now they are my first choice. Beyond the obvious performance upgrades, I like that I get to keep my OEM turbos. here are the two models I am considering:

My target is a "modest" 700 crank H.P.

If I were to ever do that, I would talk to Kevin. First. (UMW)
Second, I would probably look at getting the GT2 OEM turbos. Someone was selling a set on here awhile ago.

You might consider asking over on 6speedonline, it seems like a lot of the hardcore modders post there more than here.

Looks like Kevin/UMW has a new website.

Check out the Porsche 380 mm brake upgrade kits too. Nice price.

Do you have E85 available to you? E85, stock turbos, and full bolt-ons would probably be close to your goal. With E85 you get quick spool up and safe power. But E85 isn't always available in all areas. And some people just don't like dealing with it. I am a HUGE fan of it myself.
Since you linked to By Design's website, Sam at Dy Design also has stock turbos rebuilt with two or three different billet compressor wheel options. They machine the stock compressor housings and "clip" the turbine wheels. Because they are stock turbos they bolt right in and function just like stock. I have the larger 68mm versions. On 93 they are good for about 600-620 whp on 93. On E85 they are good for 700-720 whp.
Talk with Sam and he will go over options for your set up.

Hey usrodeo! I spoke with John a little bit about your set up. You are in good hands and I’m packaging your stuff off now! On the turbo chargers I think you would really be a perfect fit for a By Design / TiAL upgraded VTG. Great point about the ethanol fuel if that’s a possibility. But even on 93 will meet your goal with factory drivability and no need for auxiliary controls like a boost controller. I’ll be glad to go over this in further detail with you and help you understand the options and all the pros/cons. We have done hundreds of VTG upgrades on the 997’s and also hundreds on the 991 people love them. Up to 800 to the wheels but 700 is a piece of cake these days and they are smooth as silk and proven reliable with responsible calibration.
Best,
sam

Both of those are great options, you will need to have blow of valves installed somewhere because you are losing the VGT actuator. So custom intercoolers or y pipe.
IMO I would just have your stock turbos ported you can reach your goal with no problem and save some money along the way
